UNESCO Office in Windhoek Media and ICTs continue to be a powerful catalyst for the empowerment of women Gender perspectives in media content promoted through UNESCO-supported media training; UNESCO supported training programmes offered on an equal basis to women; Member States assisted in creating an enabling environment for free and independent media and in building media capacity that avoids stereotyping women; Member states assisted in the application of gender-sensitive media development indicators;

UNESCO Office in Windhoek The most promising journalism universities in Africa are supported by UNESCO to become Centres of Excellence in journalism education Objective 1: Build sustainable Centres of Excellence in journalism education; Objective 2: Create knowledge spillover to other universities; Objective 3: Become credible facilitators for media development.

UNESCO Office in Windhoek UNESCO supports seven key areas Curricula: Implementing UNESCO’s model curricula and improving assessment systems; Staff training: Building capacities of teaching staff through training and exchange programs with other universities; Learning material: Making textbooks available in national languages and improving access to learning material; Media Resource Centers: Providing adequate equipment and technical facilities for training in new and traditional media; Management: Enhancing institutional governance, sustainability and the involvement with the media sector; Media monitoring: Improving capacities to monitor media sector development; Networking: Creating networks between regional, national and international journalism education institutions and media.

UNESCO Office in Windhoek UNESCO Model Journalism Education Curriculum The Curricula is a generic model that can be adapted according to each country’s specific needs. It takes full cognizance of the social, economic, political and cultural contexts of developing countries and emerging democracies, highlighting the connection between democracy and journalism and arguing for a more cross-disciplinary approach within journalism training centres.
