Constitution 8 th Amendment “Cruel & Unusual Punishment” PROMPT: Does Corporal Punishment in Public Schools Stop Bad Behavior of Unruly Students???? Do you? Agree? OR Disagree?

Corporal punishment is a form of discipline, in which, teachers are allowed by law to spank or paddle a student as a result of exhibiting disruptive behavior. This is not the legal definition, but this is what is practiced in schools of states that allow corporal punishment. If a student misbehaves, then a teacher can formally hit the student. It is a formal discipline structure in some school districts. It’s not simply a reaction to bad behavior. By Law…Corporal Punishment in Public Schools

School corporal punishment, covers official punishments of school students for misbehavior that involve striking the student a given number of times in a generally methodical and premeditated ceremony. The punishment is usually administered either across the buttocks or on the hands, with an implement specially kept for the purpose such as a rattan cane, wooden paddle, slipper, leather strap or a wooden yardstick. Less commonly, it could also include spanking or smacking the student in a deliberate manner on a specific part of the body with the open hand, especially at the elementary school level.

Do you? Agree? OR Disagree? Punishments at our school don’t seem to stop kids from misbehaving. If paddling were allowed at our school, certain students would probably be paddled over & over. If a teacher or principal paddled me, I would Probably hate him or her. Paddling might be an effective punishment In certain cases.

Both sides of the issue Cons: Can be taken too far. Engender hate. Humiliate child needlessly. Paddling doesn't teach a child anything except how to use force to get your way. Students should be encouraged to control their emotions and use their brains to get past challenges. Lasting damage which even the mildest form of humiliation can inflict on a young mind. Corporal punishment is about power - the power of a stronger person. It eliminates a source for potential violence. It seeks to break the cycle of abuse which has been around far too long in the opinion of the abolitionists. Pros: Quick method of enforcing punishment. Little preparation needed. Easy to do and easy to forget. When done in a limited way for the right reasons, it helps focus and motivate students in ways that other methods simply can't match. Students who got a few licks for misbehavior quickly realized they didn't want to go through that experience again.
