Update On Scientific Linux Connie Sieh Hepix Spring 2012 April 25, 2012

Scientific Linux Presentation Overview – The last six months – What we are currently working on – What we see in the future

Scientific Linux The Past Six Months The following statistics were gathered from ftp.scientificlinux.org log files ftp.scientificlinux.org These numbers are a minimum. We know that the real numbers are higher. These numbers are based on the yum access to the errata In 2011 we added statistics based on total number of downloads versus unique IP address downloads. We currently have 83 public mirrors. These statistics do not represent any of the mirror sites.

Scientific Linux The Past Six Months

SL. 5.8 released April 2012 – Updates to Wireless drivers Java Openafs in testing repo lsb_release -a now reports the same as SL6 yum-autoupdate now supports PRERUN and POSTRUN, implemented similar to SL 6

Scientific Linux The Past Six Months S.L. 6.2 released – February 2012 – Updates Openafs z2 – is in testing Yum-autoupdatte adds PRERUN and POSTRUN livecd-tools, liveusb-creator updated to x86_64 adobe repo added

Scientific Linux The Past Six Months SL Live 6.2 released – February 2012 – Web site is at – For i386 and x86_64 – CD, DVD, mini-CD – Uses anaconda to install to a hard drive – Liveusb-creator makes it trivial to create a LiveUSB from the CD/DVD images. – LiveCD-tools makes it easier for people to create their own LiveCD

Scientific Linux The Past Six Months SL 4.9 – End of Life February 2012 – ftp.scientificlinux.org 4.x tree's will be moved to “obsolete” at the end of May 2012 ftp.scientificlinux.org

Scientific Linux The Past Six Months Security updates released for all supported versions Fastbugs updates released weekly for latest versions of, SL5 and SL6.

Scientific Linux The Past Six Months Department Reorg Now have 4 other people in group – Jason Harrington – Bonnie King – Farhan Ahmed – Rennie Scott

Scientific Linux The Past 6 months Implemented automation of rpm checking – automatic repo dependency checking for SL 5 recently implemented Uses “repoclosure” from yum-utils Already had implemented this for SL 6

Scientific Linux Future Delayed because of Department reorg – Will release as a Technology Preview yum-security support for SL 6 Provides for easy CVE search Provided by yum-plugin-security rpm Requires updateinfo.xml in repodata/ which we will add See example on next slide

Scientific Linux Future ]# yum info-sec --cve CVE Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit, security thunderbird el6 Update ID : SLSA-2011: Release : Scientific Linux 6 Type : security Status : stable CVEs : CVE Files : thunderbird el6_1.x86_64.rpm

Scientific Linux Future Creation of a “Packages” database – Will be used for Quality Control Verification of “fastbugs” rpm names – Input to “updateinfo.xml”

Scientific Linux What we see in the future Continuing to have security updates for all releases of SL 5 and 6. Continuing to have fastbug updates for only the latest releases of SL 5 and 6. Note TUV extension of Lifetime from 7 to 10 years – RHEL – RHEL TUV released RHEL 6.3 BETA yesterday – So probably will release RHEL 6.3 Within 2 months

CMDB for Service Now – Pulling data from SCCM – Windows OCS Inventory – Linux
