March 31, 2014Do First: IDENTIFY THE FOLLOWING AS True or False. 1.Viruses cannot reproduce on their own 2.Bacteria are multi-cellular 3.Ribosomes make proteins 4.Energy is converted into ATP in the cytoplasm 5.Both the respiratory and circulatory help deliver gasses to your cells

Check it! 1.Viruses cannot reproduce on their own- TRUE 2.Bacteria are multi-cellular- FALSE 3.Ribosomes make proteins-TRUE 4.Energy is converted into ATP in the cytoplasm –FALSE (Mitochondria) 5.Both the respiratory and circulatory help deliver gasses to your cells- TRUE

Agenda: 1. Biotech introduction. 2. Videos & partner learning. 3. Partner practice. 4. Exit ticket.

Today’s Guiding Question: What’s going on in the cartoon? like

The manipulation of living things to produce useful products Movie Life applying scientific knowledge for practical purposes!

1.Read the three paragraphs with your elbow partner 2.Write main idea in your T-chart 3.Underline evidence that supports your main idea in the text with your highlighter

Agriculture in NCPros 1. Biotech can make crops grow bigger. 2. Increases crop yield (# of crops grown) for NC farmers.

Agriculture in NCPros Example - Forestry 3. Adding genes to make trees more resistant to fungi and bugs Might help save NC forests and lumber jobs

Agriculture in NCPros 4. Less crops eaten by insects – Ex: Development of genetically modified corn plants

Agriculture in NCPros 5. Better tasting fruits and vegetables Biotechnology in NC Agriculture

Video Reflection Questions (3 minutes) independently complete in your notebook 1.What was North Carolina’s cash crop? 2.What are the other things they plan on using cotton for besides just clothing? 3.What types of things are soy beans going to be used for? 4.What are they going to use as a vaccine to prevent the H1N1 virus?

Agriculture in NCCons 1. Genetically modified (GM) crops may contaminate other natural plants. 2. Is it completely safe?Unknown problems we haven't predicted… 3. Moral? Song/Video

Reflection Question one minute write – 30 second conversation Based on the video clip, what evidence supports what happens to the agriculture herbicide that is used to kill weeds, where does it end up?

MEDICINE in NCPros Reflection Question: (scrap paper & snowball effect) What did they discover in 1922 in relation to diabetes? How did it change in the 1970’s? History of Insulin & Diabetes

MEDICINE in NCPros 1.Biotechnology creates new treatments and medicines For example: Insulin for diabetic people- came from organs of cows & pigs but now comes from GM bacteria. 2. Creates a lot of medical jobs! History of Insulin & Diabetes

Con (risk!!!)

MEDICINE in NCCons Using Antimicrobial Solutions kills on average only 99% of germs. Kills 99% of germs? What about that 1% of germs that lives? They are immune to the sanitizer! Difference Between Hand Washing & Antibacterial Soap

MEDICINE in NCCons 1. Con: Overusing antibiotics = increased antibiotic-resistant bacteria! AKA NEW STRONG PATHOGENS 2. Moral? Is this right?

There happens to be a few bacteria who are strong enough to survive the antibacterial soap.

The strong bacteria have strong children, which means even more bacteria can survive the antibacterial soap.

Now most of the strong bacteria have survived, and most of the weak bacteria have been destroyed. Natural Selection  Evolution

Biotechnology and Genetics Can biotechnology be used for cloning? What are the risks and benefits of cloning? Can and should we “design” babies that are free of certain disease genes?

Waste & Pollution Clean Up How can biotech be used to improve our waste management? – Genetically engineered bacteria are created that can reduce nuclear waste, sewage etc. (decomposers – the eat the leftovers!)

Biotechnology and CSI! Can biotechnology be used to identify criminals? YES! Use DNA left behind at crime scenes to catch criminals!

Partner Practice! 1. Name three advantages to using biotechnology in AGRICULTURE: 2. Name two disadvantages when using biotechnology in AGRICULTURE: 3. What is one way that society benefits from biotechnology in MEDICINE? 4. What is one way that biotechnology in MEDICINE is harmful: 5. Do you think its ethical/ okay to use biotechnology? Are some uses of this technology okay, while others are not? Be specific: 6. How might a police officer use biotechnology? 7. How might a farmer use biotechnology? Expectations: 1.Partner Voices 2.In your seat 3.Focused. 4.Silently raise your hand if you have a question, and wait for Ms. Freiheit to come to you.

Exit ticket - Use ALL of your new information in your notebook to complete the mini-assessment! Practice answering these questions CORRECT by referencing your notes. USE RUBIES – this will help you on your MOCK EOG next week!!!

Biotechnology: Your Turn Now, it’s your turn to find out about this complex and controversial topic! When you’re done with your research, you’ll address the question: To what extent, if any, should genetically- engineered products be regulated and/or labeled?

Debate Rules/Procedures PROMPT: DOES BIOTECHNOLOGY HELP SOCIETY MORE THAN IT HURTS SOCIETY? 1.With your partner, using your notes and new knowledge come up with 3 arguments that support your side (Pros) 2.Prepare 2 COUNTER-ARGUMENTS(defenses for statements the opposing group might make based on the cons)

Example: SHOULD WE ALLOW SODA TO BE SOLD IN SCHOOLS? Pros:Cons: 1. Makes money1. leads to child obesity 2. Allows children to2. Makes kids hyper! make dietary choices3. not everyone can 3. Improves student afford it happiness We should allow soda to be sold in schools for many reasons. First off, it will generate money for the school. Second off, it allows students to make choices about what they eat like they have to in the real world. And lastly, students like soda so they will be happier to be at school. Some people will argue that it leads to obesity, but really soda has no more calories in it than the pizza sticks they serve us at lunch, and the size of the soda cans prevent it from being excessive. Additionally, the ice cream has sugar in it and kids are not hyper after lunch, so saying that soda will make kids hyper isn’t accurate!

Regulations: I do not and WILL NOT hear: - “you are stupid” “IDK” “This is dumb” “I don’t wanna do this” “I don’t care” etc.. I DO want to hear and WILL HEAR: – Respectful, on-task debates formation with supporting evidence from today’s lesson! – Everyone participating
