Lab Safety Review

Labs are Fun Learning in a lab setting can be fun but also very DANGEROUS. – Chemical can burn/scar skin, eyes, etc. – Open flames, hot plates, and dry ice can burn. – Sharp instruments can cut skin even through clothing or gloves. Glassware can be sharp if broken

Safety Rules Never put your face near an open container of chemicals. Dispose of materials as directed by your teacher. Report all spills to teacher so that they are cleaned up immediately. Lab areas should be left clean.

Safety Rules Be prepared to work when doing labs. Be familiar with the lab procedures. Perform only lab activities assigned by the teacher. Work areas should always be kept neat and clean.

Safety Rules Always follow all instructions (written and verbal). Safety glasses, aprons, and/or closed-toed shoes may be necessary for some labs. – Prior notice will be given. – No flip-flops or sandals 1.First offense: warning, pass to locker, 20 point deduction 2.Second offense: detention, notify parent, pass to locker, 50 point deduction 3.Third offense: receive a zero, disciplinary action by administrator 4.Shoes not in locker = receive a zero until the lab is made up for reduced points (50%)

Safety Rules Report all accidents to the teacher. Never handle broken glass. Never taste anything in the lab. Absolutely no goofing off during lab. It is essential to behave! – Or else you will receive a zero and a referral if necessary.

In Case of an Accident… Look out for one another! If someone gets hurt, notify the teacher immediately! Keep Calm If you can help, offer it, or listen to the teacher if he/she asks for you help

Personal Protective Equipment Equipment Goggles Aprons Gloves Closed-toe shoes Protects Protect eyes from toxic liquids or vapors Protect clothes from stains or damage Protect hands from chemicals Protect feet from sharp/heavy objects

How to Avoid Accidents in the Lab Stop and Think! Use Common Sense When in Doubt, Ask the Teacher

Review 1.What should you do if a piece of glassware breaks? 2.Who’s responsibility is cleaning the lab? 3.What type of footwear is most appropriate for labs? 4.Is it acceptable to be playing around during lab? Why or why not? 5.What should you do if chemicals splash on you?

Review 6.List 3 ways to stay safe in the lab. 7.How should you best prepare for lab? 8.(True/False) All accidents and/or injuries must be reported to the teacher immediately. 9.(True/False) All students in the group should be participating in the lab. 10.(True/False) Students not participating in the group will still receive full credit.

Important Note Regarding Labs Labs should be a fun reinforcement of the content being taught. If labs become a problem due to students not doing what they are suppose to be doing and they are no longer beneficial  no more labs for that particular class.
