School and Community-based Food and Nutrition Program for Literacy, Poverty Reduction and Sustainable Development-Pilot Project in Indonesia Implemented by SEAMEO BIOTROP, SEAMEO RECFON and SEAMEO SEAMOLEC
Implementation report The project has the following objectives: – To increase diversity and availability of food that will meet the nutritional needs of school children, their families and Communities; – To capacitate students and teachers on food production and nutrition through experiential learning activities that inculcate the importance of agriculture, environmental concerns, and the use of locally adapted green technologies; and – To help reduce families and communities’ food expenses, create savings, and provide an alternative income to address poverty and access learning opportunities.
Implementation in Indonesia: Training on The Establishment of School Garden The following are the specific objectives of training: To assess current status and needs of the participating schools in terms of nutrition, literacy, and entrepreneurship; To enable the participants to internalize the importance of nutrition to the education development of school children; To provide the participants basic knowledge and skills on school garden models and agriculture technologies that could be adopted in a school garden setting; To introduce the concepts and principles of online teaching system to support literacy development in the context of school garden; and To enable the participants to design their school garden plans for their respective schools.
Date and Venue: The training has been conducted on March 2016 at SEAMEO BIOTROP headquarter in Bogor, West Java, Indonesia. Participants: 52 participants from elementary schools (14), primary schools (13), high schools (13), vocational schools (5), special education (2), district education agency (1), community health centre (1), community (1), foundation (1), university (1). Participants come from 29 cities/districts spread in 9 provinces. The participants were selected from 150 entries from 34 cities/districts covering 12 provinces in Indonesia. Outputs of the Training Compilation of the current status and needs of the participating schools in terms of nutrition, literacy, and entrepreneurship participants were given a questionnaire prior to their departure to SEAMEO BIOTROP to attend the training Compilation of lecture materials from resource persons all lecture materials have been documented to produce online training/teaching materials on school garden in the future Compilation of school garden designs/action plans of the participating schools at the end of the training, all participants were given a task to make design/action plan of school garden for their respective schools
Issues and Challenges Issues – A whatsApp group for participants has been developed and communication is very active to exchange experience and consult problem – The school garden programme has created snow balling effects – Participants were trained to create blog to document their school garden activities (39 participants have created blog), and communication using Webex – Some schools have started their school garden project in their school using seeds distributed during the training, some already harvesting the vegetables. Some school already practice compost production and hydroponic – School garden programme has been presented at the 6 th Annual Forum for High Officials of Basic Education of SEAMEO Member countries and Associate Member Countries, April 2016 in Bandung; 2 nd Strategic Dialogue of Education Ministers (SDEM) April 2016 in Bandung; 2 nd High Official Meeting on SEA-TVET May 2016 in Bali positive response
Challenges – Transfer of plant materials between countries network with local experts and institutions to use local species – Funding to support schools finding sponsors through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) – Limited funding for supervision on-line communication through WhatsApp and WebEx – Not enough technicians to give technical support collaborate with relevant institutions
Recommandations for Moving forward School garden is strategic programme to improve nutrition, literacy, and introduce entrepreneurship to students and community SEAMEO BIOTROP, SEAMEO RECFON and SEAMEO SEAMOLEC will allocate budget to for school garden programme every year for training, technical support, and supervision Seeking partners in other SEAMEO member countries universities/Vocational School/Research Centre on Agriculture (to tap resource person, and long term supervision) Collaboration with other SEAMEO centres to co-host the training Promote school garden as common practice at schools in the SEA region, support budget from the MoE of the respective countries To hold annual competition at national and regional level Explore partnerships with parents and private sectors as part of Corporate Social Responsibility
