CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC

Central African Republic Starting in March 2013, after decades of dictatorship, a ruthless rebel coalition called the Seleka has engaged in the arbitrary and rampant murder of civilians, including women, children and the elderly. The humanitarian situation teeters on the verge of disaster, with growing numbers of internally displaced people and refugees fleeing to neighbouring countries. The risk to education grows as... At a school partially occupied, several families withdrew their girls because they feared sexual violence or abuse by the rebels. Children were also routinely taken out of classes to run errands for the rebels, such as buying cigarettes, food and drink. FACA is currently using a nursery school as a military base in the evenings as part of a new detachment sent to reinforce existing troops in Bocaranga. The school in the village of Nana-Barya is currently being used as an APRD meeting place. APRD chose to have a meeting place in Nana-Barya because it is strategically located at an intersection of roads that diverge and lead west to Cameroon and north to Chad…. The use of the school by APRD is preventing classes from taking place regularly and returnee children from attending school. 12 schools were used, attacked or destroyed during confrontations between CPJP and UFDR, as well as during FPR attacks, affecting a total of 1,500 children. The school in Ouadango (Nana Grébizi prefecture) was destroyed when a Chadian army helicopter landed on it during a military operation against FPR. Two other schools were used by CPJP in Yangoudrounja (Haute-Kotto prefecture) and Miamani (Bamingui-Bangoran prefecture) as military outposts. *See abbreviations of armed groups on following slide
