2014 New Leaders: What’s Your Challenge? Emily Leathers Engineer at Brigade 8 October 2014 #GHC

Got questions? We all do! We all have answers too.

2014 Getting Support  Manager  Mentors (internal and external) −Been there, done that −High touch and specific advice  Peer Groups −Get exposure to lots of new ideas fast −Feedback from people in roles similar to you  ^ These supports work together, they’re not interchangeable!

2014 Forming a Peer Group  Pick your theme.  Start a mailing list.  Be inclusive when you invite.  Choose a night and set a recurring event.  Encourage members to bring a friend.  Just get started.

2014 What’s Your Challenge?  How do I balance project management, mentoring, and technical leadership?  My team isn’t moving fast enough.  I’m concerned my team won’t respect me if I’m not committing code every day.  How can I help a team member who isn’t meeting my expectations?  I have team members who choose projects/tasks that aren’t high priority!

2014 Today 1. Form a group with 5-7 people sitting near you. (You’ll want to be able to see and hear each other.) 2. Each person gives their name and a 1-2 sentence description of a challenge they’re facing. 3. I’ll give you a time-check every 10 minutes; move on to a new challenge.

2014 Rules 1. Step up, step back 2. Everyone talks 3. You have something to contribute 4. Focus on solutions, not commiserating 5. You get out what you put in 6. Put away your phone, pull out a pen

2014 Don’t Stop Here!  Trade business cards with your group.  Start more conversations like these at lunch and breaks this week.  Start your own group at home. −Join  Say hello: Emily Leathers from Brigade
