WATER RELATED INJURIES

Drowning: death through submersion in and inhalation of water Water is breathed into the lungs which can happen when someone is struggling while swimming, getting dunked, or as simple as getting water into the mouth. WATER RELATED INJURIES Target: I will be able to explain ways to reduce risk of injuries in and around water Pg. 25

Dry Drowning: Closing of the airway due to breathing in water which causes vocal chords to spasm and close up shortly after the water incident. Secondary Drowning: Airways open up and let water into the lungs where it builds up Occurs 1-24 hours after the water incident. Secondary Drowning

In the U.S., about 10 people die from unintentional drowning every day. Of these, 2 will be children aged 14 or younger. Drowning is the 6th leading cause of unintentional injury death for people of all ages And the 2nd leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 14 years

Who is Most at Risk? Males: Nearly 80% of people who die from drowning are male Children: Children ages 1 to 4 have the highest drowning rates Minorities: The fatal unintentional drowning rate for African Americans is significantly higher than that of Caucasians across all ages.

Factors Influencing Water Related Injury Risk: Lack of Swimming Ability Lack of Pool fencing/Barriers Lack of Close Supervision

Location: People of different ages drown in different locations. Most children ages 1-4 drown in home swimming pools. More than half of drownings among those 15 years and older (57%) occurred in natural water settings (lakes, rivers, oceans). Death and High Rocks 2016

Alcohol Use: Alcohol use is involved in 70% of deaths during water recreation, almost ¼ ED visits for drowning, and about 1 in 5 reported boating deaths. Seizure Disorders: For persons with seizures, drowning is the most common cause of unintentional injury death, with the bathtub as the site of highest drowning risk. Summary: Failure to Wear Life Jackets on Open Water
