INQUIRY 9/6 & 9/7 PLEASE TAKE OUT YOUR LAB BOOK TURN IN YOUR SYLLABUS/SAFETY CONTRACT TO THE INBOX

WARM-UP 9/6 & 9/7 WHAT ARE TWO CHANGES YOU COULD MAKE TO YOUR HAND- WASHING EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN TO MAKE YOUR RESULTS MORE TRUSTWORTHY?

CHAPTER ONE MAJOR CONCEPTS PLEASE WRITE THESE DOWN IN YOUR LAB BOOK, IN THE NOTES SECTION: ALL QUESTIONS ARE NOT TESTABLE BY SCIENCE. SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY IS A SYSTEMATIC, NONLINEAR PROCESS. WELL CONSTRUCTED SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATIONS NEED A DESIGN THAT LEADS TO VALID AND RELIABLE RESULTS. COMMUNICATING AND DEFENDING RESULTS IS A CRITICAL PART OF THE SCIENTIFIC PROCESS.

“A CLEAN DESIGN” SET UP A NEW ASSIGNMENT IN SECTION 3 OF YOUR LAB BOOK CALLED “A CLEAN DESIGN” PLEASE GET A SET OF BOOKS FROM THE CABINET ONE PERSON READS INVESTIGATION A, ONE B AND ONE C FOR YOUR INVESTIGATION, RECORD: 1.WHAT WERE THE MANIPULATED, RESPONDING, AND CONTROLLED VARIABLES? 2.HOW WAS DATA COLLECTED?

LAB GROUP DISCUSSION SHARE YOUR FINDINGS WITH YOUR LAB GROUP DISCUSS: WHICH EXPERIMENT WAS THE “BEST”? WHY? RECORD YOUR GROUP’S ANSWERS IN YOUR LAB BOOK.

NOTES TIME!- SECTION TWO OF YOUR LAB BOOK A “GOOD” EXPERIMENT SHOULD BE BOTH VALID AND RELIABLE. VALID = CORRECTLY FOLLOWS THE RULES OF THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD RELIABLE = CAN BE DONE OVER AND OVER AGAIN TO GET THE SAME RESULT

VALID VS. RELIABLE ValidReliable One manipulated variable Multiple controlled variables Use of experimental control Standard way of collecting data Peer review Repeating trials and averaging results Using accurate tools Cleaning your equipment, etc.

EXPERIMENTAL CONTROL A VALID EXPERIMENT HAS AN EXPERIMENTAL CONTROL OR STANDARD TO COMPARE YOUR TRIALS TO. EX: WATERING PLANTS WITH A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT SODAS. YOU NEED A “NORMAL” PLANT, WATERED WITH JUST WATER, TO COMPARE EVERYTHING ELSE TO. DISCUSS: WHAT WOULD’VE BEEN A GOOD EXPERIMENTAL CONTROL FOR THE HAND-WASHING LAB?

HEALTH INSPECTOR LAB! PRETEND THAT THE KING COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT IS COMING TO TAHOMA NEXT WEEK. IF THEY FIND ANY NASTY BACTERIA, THEY ARE GOING TO SHUT THIS PLACE DOWN! YOU NEED TO HELP THE JANITORS FIND THE MOST INFECTED PLACES SO THEY CAN CLEAN UP JUST IN TIME. YOUR GROUP WILL DESIGN AND CARRY OUT AN INVESTIGATION TO HELP THE JANITORS SOLVE THIS PROBLEM.

TESTABLE QUESTIONS A SCIENTIFICALLY TESTABLE QUESTION: HAS A REAL ANSWER THAT CAN BE DETERMINED USING THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD DOESN’T INVOLVE OPINION As a group, determine the best, testable question and be prepared to share it. Also be ready to share a question that is NOT testable by science.

HEALTH INSPECTOR EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN TIME TO DESIGN! READ THE PROTOCOL ON PP FOR CULTURING BACTERIA. SKIP THE FINGER AND PIPET PARTS. THEN, READ THE MATERIALS ON PAGE 20 AND WRITE A HYPOTHESIS AND PROCEDURE TO SOLVE YOUR GROUP’S QUESTION DEFINITIONS INCUBATOR = A WARM “OVEN” FOR GROWING BACTERIA (AROUND BODY TEMP) PETRI DISH WITH NUTRIENT AGAR = PLASTIC TRAY FILLED WITH FOOD FOR BACTERIA

BEFORE WE GO… IS YOUR DESIGN VALID? IS YOUR DESIGN RELIABLE?

CULTURING BACTERIA ON CAMPUS DO NOT DISRUPT CLASSES BE BACK IN MINUTES LABEL THE SECTIONS OF YOUR PETRI DISHES AND TAPE IT SHUT PUT IN ON MY DESK AND I’LL PUT IT IN THE INCUBATOR OVER NIGHT

DUE NEXT TIME… TESTABLE QUESTION, HYPOTHESIS, AND PROCEDURE

LAST SLIDE 9/6/16

VALID SCIENTIFIC METHOD EXAMPLES THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD DOESN’T ALWAYS FOLLOW THE SAME STEPS! EXAMPLE 1: SEA STAR WASTING VIDEO PLEASE RECORD THE STEPS OF THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD THAT YOU OBSERVE. DO THIS IN LAB SECTION OF YOUR COMP. BOOK AND TITLE IT “VALID SCIENTIFIC METHOD EXAMPLES” EXAMPLE 2: TROGLORAPTOR WHAT WAS A MAJOR DIFFERENCE IN HOW THESE SCIENTISTS CARRIED OUT THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD?
