The Clown Punk - Objectives To understand how to deconstruct a poem To revise the meaning of the poem To practice using PEDA to show understanding of a poem.

Re-cap on home work. Does Armitage use the clown punk as a warning to society or does he use him as a sympathetic character? Individual feedback

Focused Question Does Armitage use the clown punk as a warning to society or does he use him as a sympathetic character?

Task One – write down all the quotations that suggest the clown punk is a warning to society.

Task Two – Write down all the quotations that show we should be sympathetic to the clown punk.

We are going to be using these quotations to construct a PEDA paragraph. Your quotations form the EVIDENCE part of PEDA.

Pick a side Warning to society Sympathetic

Task Three – Write 3 paragraphs for one side Point – What is the poet saying about the character? Evidence – Use the quotations you already have Development – How does the quotation prove the point? Analysis – Which word in the evidence stands out to you? What does it mean to you? Use the help sheet before you ask me.

Focus on Analysis Analysis is giving your own interpretation of the evidence. You are focusing on the connotations of key words. Connotation – something that you think of when you read a word or see a picture.

Look at the images and the quotation and analyse. Think about connotations

‘’shonky side of town’’

‘’don’t laugh’’

‘’indelible ink’’

‘’deflated face’’

‘’shrunken scalp’’

‘’kids in the back scream and wince’’

‘’slather’’

Lesson Two – pulling apart a poem In your exam, you have to analyse a poem and deconstruct it to show the examiner you understand the poem in detail. The group of poems you are studying is called ‘character and voice’. You need to establish HOW the poets create a character or voice in their poems.
