NEW POINTS SYSTEM

THE NEW POINTS SCALE The grades we achieve at both higher and ordinary level are now numbered from 1 – 8.

THE NEW POINTS SCALE In your Leaving Certificate you are awarded “points” for each individual grade you achieve. 25 Bonus Points will be awarded for H1 – H6 in Maths.

WHAT DOES THE NEW SCALE HOPE TO ACHIEVE? To fairly reward students achievements To minimise random selection on some courses. (in the old system a lot of students achieved the same points, this will be less common on the new scale as the points awarded are no longer multiples of 5) To encourage more students to take up higher level subjects by awarding points at H7 grade

WILL THERE BE BONUS POINTS FOR MATHS? 25 bonus points will continue to be awarded for Higher Level Maths for H6 and above.

BASIC MATRICULATION REQUIREMENTS Each college course has its own matriculation/basic entry requirements. These entry requirements will change with the new scale. Where the requirements are currently 2 higher level C3 grades and 4 Ordinary D3 grades, in 2017 these will become 2 H5 and 5 O6/H7 grades. Where the requirements are currently 5 ordinary level D3 grades, in 2017 these will become 6 O6/H7 grades. Where the requirements are currently 3 higher level C3 grades and 3 ordinary level D3 grades, in 2017 these will become 3 H5 and 3 O6/H7 grades.

BASIC MATRICULATION REQUIREMENTS Colleges will change to the new scale matriculation requirements in their 2017 prospectus and you will also find up to date information on their websites You can also access the following websites to search for information on individual courses and Or please ask Miss Harris
