Forest of trees is shaped into two lungs Lungs are vital to our survival.

Dark gray clouds Sharp Contrast of color Green Vs Brown

Sun obstructed by clouds Still casts a shadow at the back of the picture And at the front of the picture No shadow is cast on the countryside

Angle purposely captures overcast clouds Focus is as the center of the lungs Not here, at the damaged part.

Lungs take up the vast majority of the picture There are small brown trucks inside the destroyed part Their effect is very large and substantial

Small dirt roads Lead off screen Allow trucks to reach lung

Setting still surrounded by beautiful countryside

Character: The forest of trees is shaped into two lungs that represent the key element of life: air. Lungs, a vital organ in our body, allow us to take in oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. Trees take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen. By killing the trees (which are shaped like lungs) people are destroying their own life. This illustrates that by destroying the environment, people are destroying what people need to survive. Color: The sharp contrast between the green and the brown demonstrates the battle between the unspoiled environment and mankind’s desire to build. The green symbolizes life because green is the color of plants and trees when they are alive. The brown represents destruction caused by mankind. These two colors cannot exist together, they are in a constant battle to prevail. In the picture, the green trees are battling the destruction caused by humans. The gray clouds portray the mood that the environment is losing. The ominous and scary nature of storm clouds show that the future is troubling for the environment. Light: The sun is obstructed by the overcast clouds., but still casts a faint shadow at the bottom of the picture directly under the gray clouds. However, the open countryside is in the light. The shadowed part at the bottom portion and at the top of the picture, indicate that the environment is being attacked from both sides. Since the open countryside is not in a shadow, the imminent future doesn’t look so bad, but people will have a rude awakening when the time does come if people do nothing. Angle: The angle purposely captures the clouds and the overcast sky as if it is coming onto the lungs. With the ominous clouds in the future, the destruction of the environment will continue to a catastrophic end. The angle also places the green lungs as its main focus, rather than the brown destruction. The artist displays optimism, and is focusing on how humans can still do something about the destruction of the environment. All of which points to that people still have time, and there is still lots of beautiful land. Yet, if people don’t act now, then the pollution of our air will cause catastrophic results. Proportion The lungs take up the majority of the picture. Therefore, the air we breathe is a big part of our life and our breath. There are small brown trucks inside the destroyed part of one lung. These trucks have clearly caused a large amount of damage. These trucks are small compared to the damage they’ve done and the rest of the lungs. However, their effect is obvious. This illustrates that little by little, mankind’s development has unknowingly destroyed a large portion of the forests in the world. Placement: Small dirt roads at the bottom right corner lead off the screen. The placement of the roads in the bottom right corner signifies how weak the are. Combined with the fact that the roads are not paved and are barely even there. If people ignore them or make them permanent by paving them, then the problem will be much harder to reverse. This demonstrates that the damage has not yet been made permanent and can be healed. Setting: The setting is surrounded by beautiful pastureland and countryside. The setting around the lungs is an open countryside, which is most often developed into cities. However, the countryside is still intact and beautiful, signifying that we have time. If people delay however, the rest of the countryside will look like the brown destroyed part of the right lung. The destruction of forests is destroying the air we breathe and slowly killing us, but it is not too late if people act now.
