Camp D Tent Troubles

Dilemma: All the cabins at Camp D have fallen down after years of use and a harsh winter. Maintenance has cleared all of the fallen buildings and have placed a number of 6’ X 12’ concrete pads.

In order to have a successful Camp D experience this year we need to bring our own materials to build shelters for you and three of your friends.

♣ Roles and Norms: Facilitator ♣ ♣Gets the team off to a quick start Makes sure everyone understands w hat is going on Organizes the team so they can complete the task Make s sure the team stays together ♣ Who knows how to start? ♣ Does everyone get what to do? ♣ I’m not sure we all understand … can someone help? ♣ Can someone explain it another way? ♣ We need to keep moving together so we can

♥ Roles and Norms: Resource Monitor ♥ ♥ Asks team questions in order to determine if outside resources (books, notes, materials, people) are needed Calls the teacher over for team q uestions Collects, cares for, and returns supplies Organizes clean up ♥ Are there other materials/resources that would help us? ♥ Do we all have the same question? ♥ I’ll call the teacher over. ♥ We need to clean up. Can you... while I...?

♦ Roles and Norms: Product Monitor ♦ ♦Makes sure each member understands the work, records the data, and can report out Gives update statements on team’s progress Facilitates the organization of the report Makes sure each group member’s thinking is incorporated in the group’s final product ♦ Are all of our ideas included in our final product? ♦ Is everyone prepared to report out our ideas? ♦ Did everyone get that in your notes?

♠ Roles and Norms: Equity Monitor ♠ ♠Encourages equal participation and enforces use of norms Makes sure all voices are heard Assures that all group members explain their thinki ng Assures that all group members understand others’ thinking Substitu tes for absent roles ♠ Remember, no talking outside our team. ♠ How can we work this out? ♠ Can someone restate what was just said? ♠ We need to work on listening to each member of the team.

Tent shape options: What shapes do you see?How about this one?

Problem parameters (what do you need): Decide upon your tent style. Make a sketch of your tent. Draw a net of the tent on graph paper, label each: Decide on units of measure. Give precise measurements of each. (YOU MAY NOT BUY A PRE MADE TENT!) FacesEdges VerticesAngles Height Area of each section

Make a poster of your tent design Final Product: Each group should produce a poster of their tent. The poster should be complete in telling the story you found in your data. You must have at least one graphical and one numerical representation on your poster.

Share your great work in a Poster Gallery Walk – Tellers and Travelers One of your group members will stay and answer questions while the rest of the group travels around looking at the other group’s tent posters.

Revisions: Each group will have an opportunity to use the feedback from their classmates, the teller collected to revise their poster.

Extension 1: Choose the materials. Find the cost. ExcelanteCraptastic Material Canvas ($6.00 sq yd) Nylon ($4.50 sq yd) Poles Wood ($1.33 linear ft) PVC ($.85 linear ft) Tie downs Rope ($.08 linear ft) Bailing wire ($.03 linear ft)

Show me the money! Your budget is $120. Can you build your tent within this budget? If not, what can you change? If you can, what can you make better?

Extension 2 Scale down the dimensions from the net drawing we did earlier to inches or centimeters Build the tent with the materials from the room

Present your final poster to the whole group  Tell us about the original work and how your group took the feedback and changed your project.  Share how you choose your original design and any extensions your group got a chance to work on.  Have 4 facts ready to share (one given by each member of the group) of things you learned working on this project.

Rubric Note: This is the rubric for the two gallery walks. Do not use this slide in your presentation. Click on the word “Rubric” above to retrieve the rubric.
