Advantages of X ● Administering a remote machine graphically. ● Administering several machines using a single system, controlled by a single display, keyboard and mouse. ● Can communicate securely over the Internet by tunnelling the connection over an encrypted network session. ● Separated architecture from kernel. ● Hardware-independent ● Open source!

OpenGL and XGL OpenGL (Open Graphic Library) is an API for writing applications that produce 2D and 3D computer graphics. Xgl is an X server architecture designed to talk to graphic cards trough OpenGL drivers. Xgl was developed on public from January 2, 2006.

Compiz and Beryl ● Compiz was released by Novell in January 2006 for Xgl (some of ATI and Nvidia cards) ● On May 22, 2006, Compiz worked with AIGLX (some of Intel cards) ● On September 19, 2006, Beryl was forked! ● On October 20, 2006, Beryl was released. ● On December 26, 2006, Beryl was released. ● On February 20, 2007, Beryl will be released!

Beryl features ● Desktop Cube – Rotate Cube ● Snow effects – Water effects ● 3D effects (Stacked windows) ● Animation (e.g. minimizing, maximizing, closing and etc.) ● Window decoration ● Wobbly windows ● Application switcher (alt-tab functionality) ● Resize window ● Set window attributes by various criteria ● Customizable theme manager ●...
