Can you identify the parts of this MCQ? The boy _____ playing football. a)A b)Am c)Is d)were stem options distracters Key (answer)

Things to think about before writing an MCQ? What are you testing? Use familiar language Make sure there is only one correct answer (make distracters plausible) Avoid using similar words in the stems and in the options

Imagine you were taking the test Would you get confused when reading the stem and options? (clarity) Would you be able to answer the question without looking at the options? (re-write the stem)

Imagine you were taking the test (2) Are the options straight from the book? (If so, there is a problem) Are the distracters weak? Students may be able to guess the correct answer (re-write)

Starting to write an MCQ What are you testing? Grammar, vocabulary, something else? Make sure your question tests what you intend.

Starting to write an MCQ The STEM Try to make this the longest part of the question and as clear as possible

Starting to write an MCQ The OPTIONS Try to make these short in length Make them plausible (no silly answers)

Starting to write an MCQ The KEY or CORRECT ANSWER Ensure you have only one correct answer.

Starting to write an MCQ The Distracters or incorrect answers Make all answers the same length Try to provide plausible or possible answers, but not the correct answer

MCQs - Lastly Although these may seem easy to write, take your time. Get a friend or colleague to check your questions. All the best!!
