Cost-effective Techniques For Long life Of Lead Acid Batteries A lead acid battery comprises a positive plate coated with lead dioxide (PbO2) and negative plate of soft spongy lead (Pb). When a current passes through electrolytic acid discharging the two types of lead converts to lead sulfate (PbSO4). During charging the two lead separate again to become Pb and PbO2. This is what is known as a full cycle of charging-discharing. Thus, battery life is measure as a certain amount of life cycles of charging and discharging. Reasons Behind Premature Failure Of Batteries The common problem behind lead acid batteries is that the active materials known as dioxide lead (PbO), lead (Pb), and acid (H2SO4) becomes passive after converting to lead sulfate (PbSO4). This is worldwide known as sulfation. In scientific literature dealing with lead acid batteries, sulfation is referred as “hardening of the lead sulfate” and as “passivation of the PAM” (positive active material) and NAM (negative active material).

Hardening of the lead sulfate happens if the two leads types (PbO& Pb) and the acid (H2SO4) bonds and do not separate during charging. This bonding causes the battery to reduce active material mass and capacity. As the lead paste hardens this causes for temperature to increase propelling corrosion, which in terms fosters less current to go out or in to the battery. All lead acid batteries share this same predicament. This is the prevailing reason for premature failure in any type of lead acid battery used today in any motor vehicle, in power inverter, trains, golf carts, boats, forklifts, UPS, and batteries used on telecoms worldwide.
