MARBLE CATHEDRAL

Buenos Aires sau General Carrera este un lac localizat în Patagonia și împărțit de Argentina, unde e cunoscut ca Lago Buenos Aires, cu Chile, unde e cunoscut ca Lago General Carrera. Ambele nume sunt acceptate pe plan internațional.

Lacul are o suprafață de km² din care 970 km² sunt în regiunea chiliană Aisén, iar 880 km² se află în provincia argentiniană Santa Cruz Province, ceea ce îl face cel mai mare lac din Chile și al patrulea ca mărime în Argentina. În bazinul său vestic, lacul Gen. Carrera are o adâncime maximă de 586 m.

Lacul este de origine glaciară și este înconjurat de lanțul muntos Anzi. Lacul se varsă în Oceanul Pacific în partea de vest, prin râul Baker. Vremea în această parte din Chile și Argentina este în general rece și umedă. Însă lacul însuși are un microclimat însorit.

Lacul este cunoscut ca destinație pentru pescuitul păstrăvilor și al salmonidelor, precum și pentru catedrala de marmură Marble Cathedral (peștera de marmură) localizată în zona chiliană.

Peştera de marmură din Patagonia, Chile, este una dintre cele mai frumoase și vibrante peșteri albastre, parţial scufundată în apele turcoaz ale la fel de uimitor Lac Carrera. Lacul se află pe graniţa dintre Argentina şi Chile, cu peșteri situate pe partea chiliană.

Peştera este alcatuită din trei peşteri principale: Capela (La Capilla), Catedrala (El Catedral), și Peștera (La Cueva). Vizitatorii le pot explora într-o barcă mică sau caiac, dar numai atunci când apele Lacului Carrera sunt calme şi blânde. Toată această ”comoară” este amenințată de realizarea unui proiect chilian de construire a cinci hidrocentrale în zonă.

The water has eroded the marble to create cavities and marble caves. There are different color shades, depending on the contents’ impurities. There are white banks of great purity, but it is also possible to find blue and pink marble banks due to the presence of other minerals. Photo by Nico14uc
