I. THE PASSAGE Matthew 26:36-46 Mark 14:32-42 Luke 22:39-46

There is an allusion to this event in Hebrews 5:7 “Who in the days of his flesh when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death and was heard in that he feared”

Only Peter, James and John were allowed to witness this intimate communion with God and his Son. What two other events did they witness?

II. THE PLACE A place called Gethsemane

1.The Garden East of the city cross over Kidron Valley. Now your at Mount of Olives. Ascending just a little you are in a small garden. The garden of Gethsemane

Kidron means dark and murky Gethsemane means olive press

History begins in a garden “And the Lord planted a garden eastward in Eden and there he put the man whom he had formed” Genesis 2:8

History for the Redeemed ends in a Garden “And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb” Revelation 22:1

History was transformed by 2 Gardens 1.The Garden of Gethsemane 2.Crucifixion Garden “Now the place where he was crucified there was a garden and in the garden a sepulcher where in never man yet laid” John 19;41

III. THE PARABLE Gethsemane, the olive press

The Production One tree contain 10 to 15 gallons of oil The tree was beaten with rods until olives fell off Olives placed in stone mill and ground This was best oil Pulp was taken put in wood press this was used for oil in lamps

The Produce Food Light Medicine

The Picture Jesus was beaten by religious and political leaders. He was put into the Olive Press (Isaiah 53:5) Jesus is our food Jesus is our light Jesus is our medicine

Paraclete Oil often used to symbolize the Holy Ghost Calvary’s olive press caused the Holy Ghost to be poured out on the earth.

IV. THE PERIL The cup

Let this cup pass from me refers to:

The cup of suffering Not physical suffering The spiritual suffering for every sinner. The wages of sin is death……………………

V. THE PERSON AND HIS PRAYER The sympathetic man The second man

He is our sympathetic high priest. He knows your sorrow He knows suffering Our God is human too

THE SECOND MAN First Adam brought destruction to all his descendants because he rebelled against the will of God Second Adam brought deliverance to all his descendants because he submitted to the will of God
