Seventy-Fourth Street between Roosevelt Avenue and 37th Avenue in Jackson Heights constitutes Little India, a vibrant neighborhood filled with South Asian restaurants, grocery stores, and clothing boutiques. Most of these establishments employ South Asian women who have immigrated to New York. The following photographs list these women’s country of origin and the number of years they have been in the United States. Many were happy to discuss their work experience in America.

India, 30 years "I prefer taking care of my home, but I had to start working ten years ago when my husband became ill."

Bangladesh, 3 years "Everything [in America] is open. I like the freedom, but I'm shy about it."

India, 2 years "I used to teach IT in India. I miss teaching."

Bangladesh, 22 years "I used to work in Walgreens. Four years ago I decided to open my own store."

Bangladesh, 12 years "I own this salon and a clothing boutique, and I work with the U.N.”

Bangladesh, 7 years “I ran a clothing boutique in Bangladesh too. I like business.”
