WHAT’S NEXT? 9 th Grade Pre-AP Research Paper

Where We Are… We have read article and taken notes from several different articles  Lord of the Flies as an Allegory  Fear and Power in Lord of the Flies  Current Event relating thematically to Lord of the Flies  Historical Event relating thematically to Lord of the Flies

Where We Are… We have written topic and concluding sentences for each set of concrete details and commentaries We have written our introductions (with common thesis statements) and our conclusions. We are now ready move on to our Works Cited page and formatting our papers correctly.

Works Cited Works Cited follows MLA formatting standards You will need to format your Works Cited page (and the rest of your paper) in a very specific, detailed way.

Works Cited If you used a database, your citation should already be done for you  Look at the last page of your article, bottom of the page (it should say something like source citation or MLA source citation).  Most of these are about 85% correctly formatted, however there are a few slight pieces that may need to be changed- so please pay attention.

Follow Grammar Rules for Punctuation… Even if the title of the article is in all caps, or some words are capitalized and some are not, you must change it to be grammatically correct  Example: “HITLER’S REIGN OF TERROR” or “Hitler’s reign of terror”  “Hitler’s Reign of Terror”

Database names should be italicized All database names (Elibrary, General OneFile, etc) will be italicized. Elibrary, General One File, CQ Researcher

Other sources used… If you used a webpage, you will need to look up the format on Battlefield’s web page (under library research/MLA formatting) and follow the correct format. For the novel, you will use the following format: Lastname, Firstname. Title of Book. City of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Medium of Publication.

Citing other Sources Henningfeld, Diane. Lord of the Flies. Novels for Students. Ed. Diane Telgen. Vol. 2. Detroit: Gale Gale Cengage Learning, Web. 2 Feb Olsen, Kirstin. Understanding Lord of the Flies: A Casebook to Issues, Sources and Historical Documents. Greenwood: Web. 2 Feb

Once you have all of your sources… Times New Roman 12 pt. font Double Spaced Works Cited typed in the center of a new page Hanging indent Alphabetical order (by last name or title of article) NO BOLD, UNDERLINE, etc.

Formatting Your Paper Times New Roman 12 point font Double spaced DO NOT HIT ENTER TWICE AFTER EACH PARAGRAPH Title centered at the top of the page (12 pt. font- Times New Roman) Pages numbered in the upper right hand corner with your last name then page number (Provenzano 1).

Final Reminders… Do a spell check Lord of the Flies should be italicized, not underlined or in quotation marks. Titles of chapters are in quotation marks. All CD’s must be cited (author’s last name 2). If no author, first two words of the title (“The Storm”). Periods go AFTER the internal citation Have a parent or someone proofread your draft Works Cited MUST be turned in with your draft
