Physics 11: Mr. Jean February 3 rd, 2012

The plan: Video clip of the day Lab contracts Review Algebraic re-arranging of equations –Solutions Scientific Notation –Adding & Subtracting –Multiplying & Dividing Why Physics….

Collecting Lab Contracts: –Pass in any completed lab safety contracts to the physics 11 box in the back of the classroom.

Side #1: Re-arranging Formulas:

Scientific Notation: Converting from decimal notation to scientific notation. Example #1: = 7.1x10 4 Example #2: = 1.80x10 -3

Scientific Notation: Converting from scientific notation to decimal notation. Example #1: 8.1x10 5 Example #2: 7.80x10 -4

Work to complete in class: Complete scientific notation and re-arranging assignment for TUESDAY. This will be the first homework check of this semester. What is a homework check????

Why Physics? Kinematics: –Theme parks –Cars / motor vehicles –Pulleys, lifts, pendulums, sling shots, and inclined planes. –Banked turns Centripetal Forces Demo? Why not.. (Tire) –Projectiles Arrows, Paintballs, and People?... Why not.

Why Physics? Dynamics: –How much forces is needed to stop a car? –How will the roller coaster stay on the track? –If I punch a wall, what happens? –How do forces effect motion? –Will I break my surfboard if?

Why Physics? Conservations of… –Energy? How does this apply to life? –Momentum? Collisions anyone?

Why Physics? Waves: –Energy transfer Vortex Wave Demonstration? Sure… –Sight and Sound –Electro-magnetism Doppler Effect Demonstration? Sure…

Physics 12: Other fun stuff… Modern Physics –Special Relativity? Twin Paradox? 200 ft long ladder in a barn 3 foot barn? Space time

Physics 12: Other fun stuff… Modern Physics –Radio Active Decay? Electrons change to protons? What is a neutrino? (Slow down!) Half Lifes? Do not get cooked?

Physics 12: Other fun stuff… Modern Physics –Nuclear Physics? How much energy is stored in? How to calculated and predict nuclear reactions? Boom goes the Dynamite?

Physics 12: Other fun stuff… Modern Physics –Quantum What is nothing? Why is probability important? Let’s be at two places at once.. It’s more fun that way? Super cool particles… what happens then?

Physics & Life? What is just beyond the edge of the universe? Are there parallel universes? What is a multi-verse? How many dimensions are there to life? Anti-matter? What is infinity?

Quantum Futures: BBC – The Quantum Revolution Monday’s class: –I am at the school; however I am doing work for the school board. –Classes will be back to normal on Tuesday.
