What is Agriculture? Simple definition Anything that has to do with plants, animals, and natural resources What is the connection with those three terms? Why teach it in the classroom?

“Agricultural Education prepares students for successful careers and a lifetime of informed choices in the global agriculture, food, fiber and natural resources systems.” How is that mission accomplished?

Dates back to the days of George Washington Concepts of how to work with the Earth and sustain a nation Washington noticed effects on his farmland when he couldn’t grow other crops after the harvest of tobacco The tobacco depleted the soil of its nutrients The Morrill Acts of 1862 & 1890 served as the foundation for higher education in Agriculture and Mechanics

Both Morrill Acts were what developed the concept of land grant universities Colleges that were based on Agriculture and taught its students how to be successful farmers Can you name Minnesota’s Land Grant Univeristy? How did this concept arrive in the public school system? The Smith-Hughes Act of 1917 The act established vocational education in the areas of agriculture, trades and industry, and home economics. This act provided federal funds The goal was to “train people who have entered upon or who are preparing to enter upon the work of a farm
