 The population of the country as of 2008 was 127,704,000  The largest city in Japan is Tokyo

More than 70% is mountainous terrain. The plains make up 20% of the land and these are settled along the Pacific Coast. The cities, farmland and the population all compete for the same place on the plains. This means that the population that is 4 times the size of California crowd into a land that is 1/5 of its size! DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE HIGHEST PEAK IN JAPAN IS???

 This is a region of tectonic activity along the rim of the Pacific Ocean. It is a subduction zone which means that earthquakes and volcanoes can rock this region!!

 A tsunami is a large wave that is caused by tectonic activity.  A singe tsunami can travel at hundreds of miles an hour and it can rise up to 100 feet as it reaches the shore.

 Japan lies at the same latitudes as the east coast of the US and therefore they have similar climates  Northern Japan has the potential of harsh winters due to the cold and icy winds from the mainland  Southern Japan has humid subtropical climate which means there are mild winters and warm and humid summers

In 1940 Japan signed an alliance with Germany and Italy as they entered WWII They attacked the US in 1941 at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii They continued to attack and conquer many Pacific Islands before being pushed back by the US and their allies. The end of WWII marked the end of Japan’s military empire

After WWII Japan established a democratic government and with the help of the USA they started to rebuild their country Today Japan is a constitutional monarchy which means the government has an elected law making body (Diet) and a Prime Minister

 Due to its location near the marine life, Japan is the largest fishing industry in the world  Despite its dependence on natural resources from other countries, they do produce other goods that are wanted and needed around the world  Japan is the 2 nd largest industrial power (after the USA)  They are the world leader in production of: TV’s, cameras, radios, watches and motorcycles  Japan is also a leader of advances in technology
