tsunami’s DECLAN FERGUSON AND CONOR FEGAN

What is a tsunami? A tsunami is a massive tidal wave that is caused by two tectonic plates below the water. The two plates rub together and create the destructive wave that wipes everything in it’s path.

Deadliest tsunami encounter The deadliest ever earthquake was a 9.5 magnitude on May 22, 1960 which generated one of the worst tsunamis of the 20 th century. It also caused a volcanic eruption. The tsunami spread over the pacific ocean and waves reached up to 25 meters in some places.

Japan 2011 The 2011 earthquake off the pacific coast of Tohoku was a 9.0 undersea megathrust earth that occurred at 2:46pm on Friday the 11 th of March buildings collapsed during the chaos people sadly lost their life during the tsunami.

Iquique, Chile The earthquake struck off the Chilean coast on the 1 st of April with a 8.2 magnitude. It triggered a tsunami that hit the coast. It was that strong there were reported similar sized tsunamis that hit the coast of Pisagua and Africa.

Consequences of a tsunami Tsunami’s cause lots of destruction and upset. They destroy lots of buildings and kill many people.
