Welcome to Class 2

We are a class of 20 mixed year one and year two pupils. Mrs Witter teaches on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Mrs Schilling teaches on Friday morning and Mrs Middleton on Thursday and Friday afternoon. Mrs Simmons is our wonderful teaching assistant and Miss Hannon will also be popping to support children from time to time.

Spellings Spellings will be given out on a Friday during Phonics time and will be related to the sounds being taught in the coming week. These should then be practised on the grid in the pupil’s spelling book as often as possible, ready for the test on Friday. There will usually be 6 words given but there will be 2 additional unseen words included in the test which follow the same pattern – this checks to see if children can then apply their learning. For example spelling pattern – ‘igh’ given words light, bright, fight, high, might, bright extra words – night, sight.

Reading Reading books and reading record books should come into school each day and will come home with them every afternoon. Please comment in the reading record whenever you listen to your child read at home as extra stickers are awarded for regular reading at home. Do not feel obliged to read a full book every night as little and often works well. Children are encouraged to take responsibility for changing their own reading books as required, but please let us know if this isn’t happening very often!

Your child will read in their guided reading group with myself once a week and will be listened to individually by Mrs Simmons at least once a week also. Please read and encourage your child to act on any comments made by staff in school. In addition each child also has a Class 5 reading buddy, who they will read with once a week in an friendly, informal and supportive way.

Homework Homework will be given out on a Friday in their yellow Homework book and should be handed in by the following Thursday morning at the latest. Prompt return of homework on Monday morning is rewarded with a sticker. Homework may be Literacy, Numeracy or Topic related. Homework club is offered one lunchtime each week (day to be confirmed) for children who wish to complete homework in their lunchbreak.

P.E. P.E. kits should be in school all week and can stay in for the half term. P.E. days are Monday, Thursday and Friday. Weather permitting we will be outside for P.E. every Thursday so Joggers, a sweatshirt and trainers will be needed in the colder months.

Bookbags Bookbags should come into school with your child everyday. Please check in them regularly as there may be important letters, information etc inside. Please ensure book bags have a name on the outside of them.

Class Rewards Good manners, effort and behaviour are encouraged in class and are constantly rewarded through … Red, Amber, green chart – we operate a traffic light system to help children understand what is appropriate / good behaviour Individual sticker charts - children get a ‘dip’ from the goody tin on completion Marble pots – marbles are awarded for group tasks / team work and the winning group members gets a sweet at the end of the week Good to be green lucky dip – a name is picked at random from all those who have stayed on green that day and they get a treat from the goody tin.

Other stuff … Children are encouraged to bring a water bottle to drink from throughout the school day. Please ensure uniform is labelled, especially jumpers and cardigans Snack money or a healthy snack can be brought in for playtime.

Communication I hope that your child will be very happy and settled in Class 2. However if you have any info you need to tell us, or any queries or concerns please don’t hesitate to get in touch. You can pop in briefly before or after school, telephone, e-mail or send a note in with your child and I will always get back to you as soon as possible. Many thanks Mrs Witter
