Trees in Claran.

On Thursday we went out to the yard with Mr. Mc Hugh looking at trees. Here are some of the things we learnt..

Our first stop was at the playground. Here are the first trees we looked at.

What kind of trees are they?

They have a brown bark.

Answer: Plum Trees

Mr. Mc Hugh told us that the plants on the steps were shrubs/bushes.

What’s the difference between shrubs and trees? Trees have a trunk with branches growing from the trunk and are usually very tall. Shrubs have no trunk. Shrubs have stems (like branches) and usually grow close to the ground.

We looked at 3 different types of trees in the woods: The Birch Tree The Ash Tree The Sycamore Tree.

Look at the following pictures and clues and see can you guess which of the trees it is. Birch, Ash, Sycamore

It has black buds and the young tree has a smooth bark.

Answer. The Ash Tree

Second Tree. It has a rough silver bark that peels off in very thin layers. It was used for making paper a very long time ago.

Answer: The Silver Birch Tree.

Third Tree. These trees are trying to grow as tall as possible to get as much light as possible. The tallest tree gets the most light and will grow and develop the best. The bark is smooth and silvery grey.

Answer: The sycamore tree

Finally, what about the trees on our garden. Do you know how many trees are on the garden? Can you name them.

Answer: There are 3 trees in the garden. 1 Spruce Tree

2 Holly Trees.

Now Senior Infants would like to show you a video they made. We have learnt lots of facts about trees. Enjoy!!!!
