VERSE 1 “According to the promise of life” Paul is the bearer of a life giving message
VERSE 2 “Beloved son” Paul had a deep love and devotion for Timothy
VERSE 3 “Forefathers” Patriarchs of the faith: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob Romans 9:1-5 – “I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost, That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. VERSE 3 “Forefathers” Patriarchs of the faith: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob Romans 9:1-5 – “…the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises; Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed forever. VERSE 3 “I remember you in my prayers” Worshipping God and praying on behalf of Timothy
VERSE 4 “Greatly desiring to see you” Paul realized this may be his last opportunity to see Timothy
VERSE 5 “Genuine faith” Not hypocritical
VERSE 6 “I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you” Paul is encouraging Timothy in three ways: 1.To discover his spiritual gifts 2.To develop his spiritual gifts 3.To deploy his spiritual gifts
VERSE 7 “Power, love, and a sound mind” Power for various ministries Love of Christ to serve others Sound mind: Exhibiting self-control
VERSE 8 “Do not be ashamed of the testimony of the Lord” Testimony is the witness of the Lord Romans 1:16 – “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
VERSE 8 “Share with me in the sufferings” Paul was stoned, whipped, imprisoned, and died a martyr Philippians 1:29 – “For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on Him, but also to suffer for His sake.”

VERSE 9 “Not according to our works” Salvation is according to God’s own purpose and grace Ephesians 2:8 – “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.”
VERSE 10 “Revealed”: Brought to light “The appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death”: Through our faith in Christ we have inherited eternal life
VERSE 11 “I am appointed to be a preacher” Paul was divinely appointed to preach the gospel
VERSE 12 “For this reason, I also suffer”: Paul’s confidence in the gospel enabled him to suffer “I know whom I have believed”: Paul had unshakable trust in his Savior
VERSE 13 “Hold fast” This is a command to Timothy to persist sound doctrine
VERSE 14 “That good thing which was committed unto you keep”: This is referring to Paul’s teachings to Timothy “Keep”: Means to guard
VERSES These verses describe those who had abandoned Paul Galatians 6:10 – “As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good to all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.”
Philippians 3:10 – “That I may know Him and the power of the resurrection” II Peter 3:18 – “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
