What’s on a map? Maps have a lot of information, but you need to know how to read them. There are several parts to a map which explain details and help you really see where you are and where you're going.

Legend or Map Key Maps often have symbols to represent such features as highways, small roads, campgrounds, and rest areas. These symbols are listed in the legend.

Compass The compass shows the directions on a map: Cardinal directions - north, south, east, and west. Intermediate directions: Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest

Scale The scale helps you measure the distance between two places. When you know the distance you can calculate how long the trip will take.

Title - Tells what the map is about

Physical Maps Physical maps show what the surface of the Earth looks like. A physical map highlights Earth’s natural features, such as mountains, rivers, and forests. Physical maps do not contain man made features. For example, a physical map would be a map of what you would see if you were looking down on Earth from space.

Physical Maps Notice you do not see country borders or city markings. These divisions are created by people. For example, there is no actual line dividing Texas from its bordering states.

Physical Maps Lets look at am examples of a physical map.

Political Maps Political maps show how humans have impacted the landscape. For example, city names, roads, country borders, etc. are all part of political maps. A political map often uses colors to show the boundaries between states or countries.

Political Maps Political maps change frequently (physical maps change very, very slowly through geologic processes) and must be redrawn often. A political map of the world that is 50 years old is no longer accurate. Wars and ethnic conflict are two major causes political maps change.

Political Maps Lets look at some examples of political maps.

Political Maps

Thematic Maps Thematic maps show specific types of information.

Types of thematic maps: Population distribution and density Economic activity Resource Language Ethnicity Climate Precipitation Vegetation

Map Review What is the purpose of a Political map? To show borders of countries, states, cities

Map Review I am planning a trip to New York. What kind of map would I most likely need? A political map Why? A political map would show me states and cities. This is information that I would likely need to know if going to New York.

Extension Activity You are an explorer setting off on a expedition or journey to new undiscovered lands. You must have permission from the ruler of your country to begin your trip. List 2 maps (Political, Thematic, or Physical) you will be taking with you and how they will assist (help) in your discoveries. Be detailed and descriptive in your answer. Remember your voyage and fame in the hands of the king and his advisors. After you are finished with you test and have turned it into the correct drawer complete the following in your foldable under Practice Makes Perfect.
