Globe Description: An object showing the shape of the Earth along with the distribution of land and water. It is mounted on a stand and can be rotated on its axis. Definition: A small three dimensional model of the Earth

Globe Advantage Disadvantage Accurate three dimensional model of the Earth Shows the distribution of land and water Lines of latitude and longitude are marked on the globe Difficult to carry Details cannot be seen on a globe Only a part of the globe can be seen at a time

Maps Description: A representation of the Earth showing information about the Earth’s surface on paper. Definition: A map is a drawing of the whole Earth or a part of it on a flat surface. Atlas- Book of maps

Maps Advantage Easy to carry Show selected features Signs, symbols and colours represent the features accurately Disadvantage Curved surface of the Earth cannot be represented accurately Maps showing large areas like continents are distorted ( size, shape, distance)

Sketch A rough drawing of an area Drawn free hand Not drawn to scale Shows only the relevant details Easy to draw

Plan Drawn for a small area Shows greater details Not drawn free hand

AreaScaleDetails MapShows a large areaUses both large scale and small scale Small scale- less details Large scale- more details SketchUsually shows a small area Not drawn to scaleShows necessary details PlansCovers a very small area Drawn to scaleShows great details

Globe: A small three dimensional model of the world. Map: A drawing of the whole Earth or a part of it drawn to scale on a flat surface. Sketch: A rough drawing of a small area showing the relevant details ( not to scale) Plan: A drawing of a small area in great detail (drawn to scale). Aerial Photographs: Photographs of the Earth or a part of it taken from a camera mounted on an aircraft. Satellite Images: Photographs of the Earth or a part of it taken from a camera mounted on an artificial Satellite.

Topographical Maps Topo- Place graphy-to describe These maps gives detailed information of a local area. Useful for construction of roads and bridges Useful for the military Used for hiking and fishing Used to survey an area
