Purpose To enable participants to practice roles, gain experience and identify areas for improvement based on the content presented in the Shelter Fundamentals course. 4For Exercise Use Only

Scope The exercise is for participants that have successfully completed the Shelter Fundamentals course. Participants will be divided into three teams. Teams will be based on four categories of shelter workers: –Dormitory –Registration –Information –Feeding 5For Exercise Use Only

Exercise Goals Promote team work through interactive group activities that correspond to opening, organizing, operating and closing a shelter. Reinforce key activities/tasks involved in opening, organizing, operating and closing a shelter as presented in the Shelter Fundamentals course. Provide participants an opportunity to set up, operate and close a shelter through a series of essential shelter tasks. 6For Exercise Use Only

Exercise Structure The exercise will be a “hands on” skills-based practice. The exercise will use a realistic disaster scenario. Participants will rotate in teams through three skills stations: –Dormitory –Registration –Information / Feeding Facilitators will provide feedback to participants upon completion of tasks at each skill station. A Hot Wash and question and answer session will be conducted after all activities are completed. 7For Exercise Use Only

Dormitory Objectives Demonstrate the ability to set up a post-impact sample shelter dormitory area according to established Red Cross shelter guidelines. Demonstrate knowledge of the Dormitory function by addressing key areas of consideration and resources needed when setting up and maintaining a dormitory. Demonstrate knowledge of shelter closing procedures by returning the dormitory to “pre-shelter” conditions. 10For Exercise Use Only

Registration Objectives Demonstrate the ability to set up a sample shelter reception and registration area for residents. Demonstrate knowledge of the shelter resident interview and registration process by completing an interview and required resident intake forms. Demonstrate knowledge of the registration process by explaining the purpose of several key forms and documents. 11For Exercise Use Only

Registration Objectives (cont.) Demonstrate knowledge of the Registration function by addressing key areas of consideration and resources needed when setting up and maintaining a reception and registration area. Demonstrate knowledge of shelter closing procedures by returning the welcome and registration area to “pre- shelter” conditions. 12For Exercise Use Only

Information Objectives Demonstrate understanding of external and internal signage needs by considering other functional areas to provide the necessary signage. Demonstrate understanding of shelter resident diversity by identifying language, feeding, health and accessibility needs. Demonstrate knowledge of the Information function by addressing key areas of consideration and resources needed when setting up and maintaining effective communications throughout the shelter. Demonstrate knowledge of shelter closing procedures by returning the information area to “pre-shelter” conditions. 13For Exercise Use Only

Feeding Objectives Demonstrate the ability to set up a sample shelter canteen area and account for expended canteen supplies. Demonstrate knowledge of the Feeding function by addressing key areas of consideration and resources needed when setting up and maintaining a feeding/canteen area. Demonstrate knowledge of shelter closing procedures by completing a closing inventory and returning the feeding/canteen area to “pre-shelter” conditions. 14For Exercise Use Only

Safety Safety is everyone’s concern. –Safety concerns override exercise execution. –Alert the nearest controller if you have safety concerns. Actual emergencies will be identified by saying: “This is a real emergency.” Report any injuries to the nearest facilitator. 15For Exercise Use Only
