United States History 13 colonies separated from Britain (the British) Famous document: Declaration of Independence *This document announced to the world that the 13 English colonies wanted to establish their own gov’t. 1 st elected president of the United States was George Washington. Famous document: Constitution *This document is considered to be the ultimate “law of the land” in the U.S.

United States Flag Colors: Red, White, and Blue Stripes of flag alternating the colors red and white. 13 stripes represents the original 13 colonies. Top left of flag is blue background with 50 white stars. 50 stars represents the # of U.S. states. The flag of the United States earned the nickname “Star-Spangled Banner” after the battle of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812.
