Newton’s Laws of Motion Essential Question: Newton established his three Laws of motion to do what?

Newton’s First Law of Motion Definition: An object in motion stays in motion, or an object at rest stays at rest until an unbalanced net force acts on it. Under these conditions the first law says that if an object is not pushed or pulled upon, its velocity will naturally remain constant. This means that if an object is moving along, untouched by a force of any kind, it will continue to move along in a perfectly straight line at a constant speed.

Newton’s First Law of Motion Continued…. The first law also means that if an object is standing still and is not contacted by any forces, it will continue to remain motionless. Actually, a motionless object is just a special case of an object that is maintaining constant velocity. Its velocity is constantly 0 m/s.

If the velocity is not changing is there an acceleration? Turn to elbow buddy and discuss.

What is Inertia? Write down something in your notebook.

Inertia Definition: Tendency of an object to resist any change in its motion.

Video Questions? Does weight and mass mean the same thing? What causes an object to move when its at rest?

If I was an object traveling at a constant velocity what would my acceleration be? If an object has a velocity of 0 m/s what would its acceleration be?

Newton’s Second Law Definition: A net force acting on an object causes the object to accelerate in the direction of the force.

Question for discussion If an object has a mass and there is an acceleration what can we calculate?

Newton’s Second Law Continued… Acceleration is determined by the size of force and the mass of an object.
