What was the space race?

The Space Race was an unnamed race between the Soviet Union and the United States of America. They were racing to the moon. The Soviet Union was the first to launch the satellite “sputnik” into orbit. The Space Race occurred during the time of the cold war in which there was much tension between the Soviet Union and the United States.

What Started The Space Race?

The space race started when the Soviet Union launched the satellite sputnik in to orbit. The U.S. then responded by forming the National Aeronautics and Space Administration or N.A.S.A. This was followed by many launches that were eventually named the space race.

When were big launches during the space race?

Important Launches 1957:Soviets launched sputnik into orbit. 1961:Yuri A. Gagarin became first person to orbit earth. 1961: Alan B. Shepard Jr. became the first U.S. Astronaut in space. 1962: John H. Glen Jr. became first U.S. Astronaut to orbit earth. 1969: U.S. Astronauts Neil A. Armstrong And Buzz Aldrin made first lunar landing
