True or false? (1 point) United Way of the Greater Triangle creates lasting change in our community by addressing basic needs and creating long term solutions for families and children in our local community. True: More than a fundraiser, United Way is a partner for social change. United Way’s collaborative approach works to meet the needs of adults and their children together to move low-income households toward economic security, success in school, and family well-being. This is done by making significant investments in 24 collaborative partnerships across four counties.

True or false? (1 point) Only United Way of the Greater Triangle staff members decide on community needs/program impacts and which non-profit agencies receive funding. False: As good stewards of the money we raise, community volunteers, experts, and agency representatives, work together to make funding decisions by gathering data, identifying community needs

True or false? (1 point) Even with United Way’s new collaborative approach, we have not forgotten the focus on basic needs. True: Our work in Basic Needs supports vulnerable populations including seniors and those who are homeless, unemployed, and uninsured.

True or false? (1 point) In Durham, Johnston, Orange, and Wake Counties there are roughly 1,600 youth in foster care at any one time. 1 in 4 will be incarcerated within 2 years of leaving the foster care system. True: United Way of the Greater Triangle is working to change these outcomes for youth in foster care by engaging diverse partners around specific targeted young people. Fostering Youth Opportunities, our first collaborative partnership, puts the young person at the center of services through a supportive network addressing education, housing, and life skills.

True or false? (1 point) United Way of the Greater Triangle is a “community chest” with a funds in/funds out approach. This model is our organization’s view of the future. False: No longer simply a fundraiser, we are funders and community partners. A catalyst for change in the Triangle area with a solutions- oriented approach built on collaboration, innovation, and the power of a community united for good.

True or false? (1 point) While Raleigh is ranked the 4th happiest city in the world, on any given night, there are 1,000 homeless people in the Triangle area. False: While it is true that we are ranked the 4th happiest city in the world, the number of people living without shelter is double that figure. This means that 2,000 of our neighbors are homeless here in the Triangle. UWGT has funded two collaborative partnerships in our region whose focus is helping families find stable housing. These collaboratives partner to provide a network of services for the whole family—not just adults or children separately. This new way of working has enabled them to free up resources and bring proven best practices to our community.

True or false? (1 point) United Way is about local giving with local impact. True: In , we made a $6M community investment. By working together with nonprofits, area businesses, community and government leaders, we work to improve lives in Durham, Johnston, Orange and Wake counties. This is the power of a community coming together, united.

True or false? (1 point) Because of United Way’s first Social Innovation Challenge in 2014, over 100,000 meals have been served to children and youth in Durham County. False: With the $50,000 award and its investment into equipment for Durham Public School’s universal breakfast program, plus the extension of summer breakfast and lunch, over 500,000 meals have been served to children and youth in Durham County.

True or false? (1 point) MLK Day of Service 2016 engaged over 3,000 volunteers around the four counties we serve. True: It is the largest mobilization of volunteers on a single day in the Triangle.

True or false? (1 point) One person can really make a difference. True: TRUE! We’re asking you to join with us in being changemakers.

Multiple choice (1 point) In the Triangle, how many children are food insecure on any given day? A. 100,000 B. 1 in 20 kids C. 20,000 A. 100,000 This means that 1 out of 5 children do not know where their next meal is coming from.

Multiple choice (1 point) How many people in the Triangle live in poverty? A. 50,000 B. 100,000 C. 200,000 Poverty has almost doubled from 2000 to (MDC report).

Multiple choice (1 point) Out of the top 100 metros in the nation, where does Raleigh rank in social mobility? A. 8 th B. 94 th C. 62 nd B. 94 th This means if you are born into poverty in the Triangle, it is extremely unlikely that you ever get out of poverty in your lifetime (MDC Report).

Thank you for playing! Add up your scores. Who is our winner? We hope you had fun and learned something new about how your local United Way is creating positive lasting change. Remember, this is not just a trivia game, these are real statistics about our neighbors, friends, family and coworkers. The need in our community is real.

These statistics reflect an urgent issue for our region. When the potential for children to move out of poverty into the middle class is low to negligible, the impact touches not only the daily lives of low income families but the economic future of the Triangle as well.

We cannot create change alone. United Way is committed to mobilizing the caring power of our community to build resources, foster collaborations and fuel the innovative spirit of the Triangle. We need your help!
