Video I will take about two minutes so we can watch this domestic violence awareness video, please feel free to react upon it once its over. Title: “Find Your Voice” Domestic Violence Awareness Sandy Now! (1:36)…]

Domestic Violence Domestic Violence is a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner, and it’s not limited to:  Physical- Hitting, slapping, shoving, grabbing.  Sexual: - Marital rape, attacks on sexual parts of the body, forcing sex after physical violence has occurred, or treating one in a sexually demeaning manner.  Emotional- Constant criticism, diminishing one's abilities, name-calling, or damaging one's relationship with his or her children.  Economic- making or attempting to make an individual financially dependent by maintaining total control over financial resources, withholding one's access to money, or forbidding one's attendance at school or employment.  Psychological- causing fear by intimidation; threatening physical harm to self, partner, children, or partner's family or friends; destruction of pets and property; and forcing isolation from family, friends, or school and/or work.

Cycle of Violence

What causes Domestic Violence? This is a result of a number of patterns, such as:  Discrimination  Environmental factors  The economy  Inequality of race or gender (influenced by society)  Cultural  Substance abuse  Individualism.

Statistical Data Facts about domestic violence:  According to the FBI, a woman is battered every 15 seconds.  Nearly 1/2 of men who abuse their female partners, also abuse their children.  Up to 50% of homeless women and children in this country are fleeing domestic violence. 9 to 12 years  A victim of abuse takes from 9 to 12 years decided to break the cycle of domestic violence.

How to maintain your safety?  Identify if there is an immediate danger.  Make sure you find support.  Talk to the police if you feel unsafe.  Maintain your self confidence, always believe in yourself.  Know your rights.

Conclusion Domestic violence should not be overlooked or ignored it should be treated for what it really is, an epidemic problem that affects a large number of female world population. We must educate and reeducate the human race by encouraging healthy relationships, necessary treatments to reduce and prevent further abuses and respect. We cannot subdue to this pandemic. If anyone can hand out these necklaces, it’s a token to my appreciation for being a part of this very important presentation, they are inscribed with the words, "If it is to be, it is up to me." The phrase, which was used often in his first gubernatorial campaign, is meant to signify every Mainer has a role to play in fighting domestic violence. I would also like a volunteer, who can read the short poem attached to the back of the necklace? It’s really short and powerful. Come on who dares to start acting now against this plague! Looks like we have a volunteer, step right up! I encourage everyone to think over the message this poem has to deliver.
