Tattoos & You My Presentation

The Product My idea for the project, is to create a roughly 30 page magazine encompassing both large, small, landscape and portrait photo’s all taken either by me or for me by a photographer in my class. These photo’s will be heavily edited within Photoshop, with varying degrees, to help cater to my target audience of year olds. My magazine will focus on personal stories of those with tattoos, as opposed to over- sexualizing the tattoos, which is what many other magazines are currently doing, hoping to build an almost intimate relationship with my reader base. Baring that in mind, my magazine will still cater to that market by including a few far away shots of a fairly attractive model of my choice. This will most likely by used for the front cover.

The Brief The brief for my project will be in a formal format, so as to best suit my needs. This is because it is a written document that includes detailed information about what the client wants the company to achieve. It is usually a straightforward document, which refrains from including any unwanted information. The brief itself may not always be classified as a legal document. The advantages of this kind brief is that it is clear, concise, due to it lacking any form of complexity. Refraining from including extended legal terms. As it is not always a legal-binding document, I can express my opinions creatively by having the ability to work around the contract.

My Inspiration Various other Magazines currently being printed commercially. A few tattooing websites on the internet. Case studies completed by various researchers and psychologists. Slideshows found within the internet, they gave me a vital insight into what students in the past had written about briefs. YouTube videos showcasing the psychology behind tattoos.

My Photo’s For my front cover and other pages within my magazine I will need a few people to model for me, all of these people are my friends and therefore will do so for free showcasing the tattoo art they already have. The photo’s will either be taken close up by me on an iPhone 5 Camera, or portrait far shot by Victoria Mann, a photographer within my class. She has agreed to do this in exchange for a coffee. All of my images will be to a high quality and easily accessed for print.

My Target Audience My main target audience will be year olds, who my research found were the most likely age bracket to have a tattoo, which makes it fairly easy to assume that they will also be the most likely age group to get a tattoo. Due to this audience, I will make sure to cater my content to suit a young mature audience of young adults, so as to keep them interested. I will achieve this by keeping my content interesting, and my pictures high quality. The magazine will of course cater to other ages, and will include content suitable for people all the way up to 50 or so years. There’s no real top limit to who my magazine could interest. The personal down to earth feel of my magazine will interest any who are intrigued by tattoos, even if they just like the way they look. I will make sure to use pretty pictures and tattoos so as to cater to the most people possible, however I will not shy away from using less attractive tattoos if they tell an interesting story.

Content My magazine will have individual pages allocated to the more personal stories, these use the smaller close up photos taken and will be used to create a much more intimate feeling within the reader. The style will be a mix of portrait photo shots over one page with a smaller description side on the opposite page taking both sides up. I will also have some pages dedicated to smaller close up tattoo only pictures with small captions explaining how and why those people got those tattoos, telling their stories to my viewing base. My target audience is mainly year olds, who either have, or are considering having a tattoo at some point in their life. The reason the audience starts at 18 is because that is the legal age to get a tattoo of your own consent.

Resources Required I intend to use Adobe Illustrator throughout the project to design my magazine, whilst also using Adobe Photoshop to edit pictures to be placed into my Illustrator document. I believe my aims are a realistic target, as it shouldn’t be too hard to create a magazine to my liking once I have the format figured out. I already have a good understanding of both these resources, so shouldn’t struggle when it comes to dealing with the selected format I choose. The only area I may need help on is the photography, however I have also found someone to help do this for me – Victoria Mann.

Funding & Finance In terms of finances, this project shouldn’t be too hard to fund. I have budgeted myself at £40-£60, so as to include for printing costs and travel. I won’t need to pay for my photo’s, as someone is doing them for me for free, although I am organizing the shoots myself with people I know. The printing alone makes up the majority of my costs, as it will be £40 minimum printing my product through the college publisher – Steve Mason. Due to not having to travel anywhere other then college, which I already pay/budget for – I do not need to include any travel costs.

The Finished Product The outcome of the project will be a double page spread magazine, with both large and small photographs of various tattoo models of my choosing. Selected from my friends and family, making it cheap and cost effective to produce. My magazine will be mainly small landscape shots of peoples tattoos up close, however on some pages I will have large full page portrait shots of my main models (who will have multiple tattoos on display.) I will use these portrait shots on the front cover, and various pages throughout the magazine, however the majority will be smaller shot tattoos up close and personal – making the magazine seem like a more intimate read. This will match the descriptions on the side of the tattoos, helping people understand why the models chose to get those tattoos in the first place, perhaps helping the readers find the tattoo design and reasoning that they will want.

Questions Is there anything you need me to clarify or expand upon? Thanks for watching.
