2013 Fall Simulation Interoperability Workshop 5 What’s New First Edition of the PSG Newsletter ER in The News Published periodically for workshops and other selected M&S events.

2013 Fall Simulation Interoperability Workshop 6 SEDRIS Standards Report Edition 2 of the ISO/IEC – Environmental Data Coding Specification (EDCS) has been circulated to ISO/IEC JTC 1 members for the Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) ballot. The ballot will close in mid-Oct ’13. Upon successful completion of the ballot, and depending on the workload at ISO ITTF, it is anticipated that the new edition of the EDCS standard will be published sometime in late 2013 or early Edition 3 of the ISO/IEC – Spatial Reference Model (SRM) is in preparation for its Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) ballot. Since the volume of the remaining work is substantial, a request has been submitted to SC 24 and JTC 1 to extend the FDIS release schedule by 12 months to Oct Edition 3 of the ISO/IEC EDCS Language Binding has been authorized to progress to Draft International Standard (DIS) stage. The changes introduced in both the ISO/IEC (EDCS) and ISO/IEC (SRM) require modifications to other SEDRIS standards, including their respective language bindings. Editing of the EDCS language binding standard ( ) began last year and is underway. New Work Items will be generated, along with Committee Draft (CD) text, to incorporate the necessary enhancements in the following standards: -ISO/IEC Ed. 2 SEDRIS Part 1 Revision -ISO/IEC Ed. 2 SEDRIS Part 3 Revision -ISO/IEC Ed. 2 SEDRIS Language binding Revision -ISO/IEC Ed. 2 SRM Language binding Revision POC: Mr Farid Mamaghani

2013 Fall Simulation Interoperability Workshop 8 The implementation of all changes to the standards has culminated in the completion of the pre-release beta version of the new 4.5 SEDRIS SDK (software development kit), and its associated array of numerous tools and utilities. These tools and SDKs allow the user community to take early advantage of the capabilities being added to the standards for use in their applications and software development activities. POC: Mr Farid Mamaghani SEDRIS SDK Implementation

2013 Fall Simulation Interoperability Workshop 9 Registration of Items Edition 3 of the ISO/IEC Procedures for the Registration of Items has been completed and the new edition was published by ISO in July 2013 (for more information see The EDCS Registry has been updated to comply with the new content and capabilities in Edition 3 of the EDCS standard. The updated EDCS Registry will become active when the standard is published. POC: Mr Farid Mamaghani

2013 Fall Simulation Interoperability Workshop 10 Reuse and Interoperation of Environmental Data and Processes Product Development Group (RIEDP PDG) Objective is harmonization of environmental data representations and generation processes at a level after the source data stage but before the runtime / proprietary stage, recognizing that there is a broad range within this band. The two products that will be developed concurrently are: -RIEDP Data Model Foundations, a SISO Guidance document composed of two (tightly coupled) parts, the Reference Process Model (RPM) and the Reference Abstract Data Model (RADM). These form the foundations for existing and/or emerging database generation projects to compare, contrast, and map their data generation process and data model capabilities to these models. Use of RIEDP Data Model Foundations will serve as a guide in establishing database generation process models and their corresponding data models within the community. -RIEDP Detailed Features Description, a SISO Standard product, will provide the required information for identifying instances and / or classes of environmental features and objects that, along with their specific attributes, value ranges, and metadata, will be utilized in environmental data products. The use of the RIEDP Detailed Features Description as a standard product will ensure data interoperability through the identification of features, their definitions (through the use of standardized dictionaries), their corresponding attributes, and any associated metadata. POC: Jean-Louis Gougeat,

2013 Fall Simulation Interoperability Workshop 11 DoD M&S Steering Committee Rapid Data Generation (RDG) Project Provide ER Support through a Common Data Production Environment. The U.S. Navy, Air Force, Special Operations Command, and the Army have geospatial data programs that vary widely in scope, but include a potential to share database investments across programs by enabling each program to discover and distribute in-process data product files in commonly used formats -Reference the same family of formats commonly used by industry. -Include their own data product archive and distribution facility. A method to establish connectivity between the facilities and employment of common data naming and metadata conventions would considerably assist the data discovery process and provide virtual pointers to where desired data sets reside. The RDG approach utilizes SOA-based web services to enable data sharing across multiple systems that produce and consume integrated, fused, and correlated data which requires: -Tagging of data in these systems with discovery metadata -Creation of integrated search capabilities that allow users to discover, assess, and obtain reusable data. POC: Dr. Rob Cox,

2013 Fall Simulation Interoperability Workshop 12 DoD M&S Steering Committee Environment Representation Data and Effects (ERDE) Project Provide consistency in environment representation across multiple tools and simulations leading to cross-program interoperability. Reduce cost to M&S programs to add environment representation, leading to concrete government expectations (in terms of contractual requirements) to include realistic environment in simulations. Enable substantial re-use of Government owned environmental data and effects representations, archives and scenarios. ERDE Technology will: — Enable higher fidelity terrain effects. — Expand current effects decision aids in all domains. — Develop expanded composability within and between EDCSS provider sites and validation in user programs, networks and simulations. — Address composability of environmental models at different resolution levels to achieve high fidelity effects and support cross-domain decision rules. — Register metadata for supporting data, tools and services. — Expand EDCSS transition to provide additional effects generation and impact assessment capabilities. — Establish a formal method to collect and document user requirements and existing capabilities to efficiently leverage DoD enterprise development of realistic cross domain environmental data and effects representations. — Leverage prior MSSC, Service, and other governmental investments in the production and distribution of authoritative environmental representations to the DoD Communities using M&S. 2013 Fall Simulation Interoperability Workshop 14 DoD M&S COI ER Working Group (ERWG) Primary U.S. DoD M&S COI forum for discussing how best to achieve the technical environmental representation goals and objectives of U.S. DoD M&S. Activities are to: -Act as an advisory group to the M&S COI -Provide leadership and management of environmental representation activities for the M&S COI -Serve as the M&S community’s advocate for environmental data and effects activities related to U.S. DoD M&S and establishing priorities for technology development in an attempt to harmonize investments across U.S. DoD. These activities help ensure that U.S. DoD investments will produce results usable by other organizations and programs, and promote discussion among USD(AT&L) - funded projects and those of other U.S. DoD Components are maximally exploited.
