Period Pre-Columbian America and Initial European Exploration

“A Cultivated World” In groups, assign a recorder and a presenter. The recorder will title a sheet of paper “ A Cultivated World” and write the group members names. They will then write each question and the group’s answers. The presenter will be responsible for answering questions to the class. Discuss and answer the following questions together. 1.What are some common beliefs about the first American Indians? 2.What do many scholars now insist is true about native settlement? 3.What stereotypes did many European colonists have of the Native Indians? 4.What evidence shows Mann (and other scholars) that the colonists’ stereotypes were wrong? 5.Why do you think scholars’ ideas change over time?

1.Pre-Columbian North America Key Concept 1.1: Before the arrival of Europeans, native populations in North America developed a wide variety of social, political, and economic structures based in part on interactions with the environment and each other.

Where did the very first “Americans” come from? Still up for debate. Prehistoric humans may have arrived between 18,000-40,000 years ago From Asia by a land bridge on the Bering Strait Others may have come across the ocean from Europe

Pre-Columbian Native Civilizations After arriving to the Americas, the new settlers discovered diverse environments This diversity led to distinct habitats, social structures, and cultures/societies. Early Indians adapted to and transformed their environments.
