Adding Fractions BY MRS. MULLER

Key Vocabulary  Numerator: The top number of the fraction (the amount out of the whole)  Denominator: The bottom number of the fraction (the whole)

What does it mean to add fractions  It means that we are putting a part of a whole together with another part of a whole.  For example: you order two large pizzas, at the end you had 5 out of 8 slices of one pizza left and 1 out of 8 slices of the other pizza left. You combined the slices in one box to save room. How much pizza is there? What are somethings that you noticed about the fractions being added together?

The Rules of Adding Fractions  The denominators must be the same.  Add the numerators together  And keep the Denominator the same

Let’s Practice

What do you do When the Denominators are Different?

The Procedure 2x12x22x32x42x5 3x1 3x2 This is allowed because you are Really multiplying by 1; 3/3=1, 2/2=1
