2011 NEFAS Member Survey Dr. Art Russell

Conclusions – Demographics Limited population; male, 50+ years old High School or better education, generally in science or technical fields Members own several or more telescopes Most participants have been NEFAS members for 5 + years The NEFAS “Old Guard”

Conclusions – Survey Questions #1 Reason to Join NEFAS: To “Do Astronomy” (Observe and learn about) Outreach not “The” Reason to join NEFAS, but a reason. Interests in Astronomy: Observing and Observing Techniques, General Astronomy, Learning about the Sky. Most participants want training and to learn about astronomy. NEFAS should spend its funds on: Club Observatory, Dark Sky Site, and trips to Astronomy locations and events

Conclusions – Survey Questions 2 Events Attended: Observing, and monthly meetings most mentioned Wanted From NEFAS: Astronomy classes, Dark Sky Observing, Star Parties, NEFAS Observatory

Conclusions – Survey Qualitative General Meeting Topics: What’s Up Next Month Desired General Meeting Topics: Astronomy Education; Current Interests; observing occultations, planets, meteors, comets, and the Moon. What can NEFAS do to increase value to its membership? – Provide astronomy Education and Training – Provide observing locations and observatory

Conclusions – Survey Qualitative 2 Types of Training and Education – Star-hopping – Observing Techniques – Telescope Maintenance – Outreach Things NEFAS is doing Right: – Outreach (!) – Monthly meetings – NEFAS.ORG – Skywatch

Conclusions – Survey Qualitative 3 Things NEFAS Doing Wrong: – No one thing – Lack of Publicity

Conclusions - Outreach Outreach does not appear to be “The Reason” for NEFAS membership Members are unsure of their ability or qualification to present Outreach Members want training in Outreach topics – Astronomy Topics #1 Type of Support from NEFAS: Mentoring
