Heliocentric View

Telescopes (Or how did they know?)

Modern Telescopes

Galileo Galilee Father of Astronomy Discovered the 4 big moons of Jupiter Ganymede Io Europa Callisto Got in trouble with the authorities for his work.

Edwin Hubble Discovered the expanding universe Described Red Shift Hubble Space Telescope named after him. He discovered galaxies Hubble discovered TONS of galaxies

The Space Race Sputnik, a Soviet communication satellite was launched October This launched the Space race Race to get to the moon Soviet Union vs USA

Apollo Moon Landing There were many Apollo missions, not every mission landed on the moon. Apollo 11 was the first to land on the moon. Apollo 1 had a fire that killed the three astronauts Apollo 8 orbited the moon but never landed Apollo 13 had a malfunction that crippled the craft Apollo 17 the last mission to the moon

What did we learn about the Moon? The moon is made of rock, not cheese. Its called Regolith, rock without any organic material. The rock is the same as the rocks on Earth The dark side of the moon is covered with craters. The dark areas of the moon are ancient lava flows. (Called Mare)

Voyager Probe sent to the far reaches of the solar system. Currently leaving the solar system. And still working!

Shuttle A reusable system to get to space. Program Challenger exploded on takeoff Columbia broke up on reentry

International Space Station a/nasatv/iss_ustream.html a/nasatv/iss_ustream.html Three astronauts live there long term. Science experiments and other things done there.
