Place The physical and human features of a location Physical (Natural) –Natural features such as landforms, climate, vegetation, and animal life –Examples Human –How people live, occupations, languages, traditions, population density, etc. –Examples

Human Environment Interaction How do humans interact with or change their environment? How does the environment shape the way humans live? Reflects Culture and Technological Advancements Questions to answer: - Why do people settle where they do? –How do people interact with their physical environment? –What are the positive and negative effects of people’s actions?

3 categories of Human-Environment Interaction Adaptation: people make a change to live in an environment (coats in Alaska and shorts in Hawaii) Modification: people change the environment to fit their needs (build terraces to farm on hillsides) Dependence: rely on something in environment to make a living (fishing and transportation on Great Lakes)

Movement Transfer of goods, people, and ideas from one place to another 3 types of movement of people - migration: to move from one location to another - immigration: moving in to another country - emigration: moving out of a country

Why do people move? Push factors reasons people emigrate (leave) Examples – war, natural disasters, unemployment, famine Pull factors ● reasons people immigrate (move into a country) ● examples: job opportunities, climate, healthcare, education, etc
