Clothing/Textiles Review Everything You Need To Know!

Sewing Equipment Final Test Review

Notions any item that is sewn or attached to a finished garment. The term can also include small tools used in sewing. 5 Examples 1.Zipper 2.Thread 3.Lace 4.Buttons 5.Elastic

Sleeve Roll To help press seams open smoothly when making long sleeves.

Pressing Guidelines for Pressing 1.Use the right temperature setting for the fabric type. 2.Press as you go. 3.Pressing is the up and down movement during construction, Ironing is gliding across the fabric to remove wrinkles.

Rotary Cutter Tool used for cutting layers of fabric into straight strips Rules for Using a Rotary Cutter 1.Always use with cutting mat. 2.Do not use pins. 3.Roll cutter away from yourself and fingers.

The Sewing Machine Review

Machines Sewing Machine- a machine with a mechanically driven needle for sewing or stitching cloth Serger- a type of sewing machine that stitches the seam, encases the seam with thread, and cuts off excess fabric at the same time. 4 ways a serger is different from a conventional sewing machine 1. It takes more than one spool of thread to operate 2. It has a small knife that trims the fabric as it sews 3. It makes a nice finished edge on the fabric so it doesn’t fray 4. It uses a lot more thread and sews much faster

The Sewing Machine The approximate width of the presser foot- ¼ inch **clue: remember how you sewed the correct seam allowance on your hoodies. The Hand Wheel In which direction do you turn the hand wheel on your sewing machine? Towards you

Matching 1.Where the bobbin is located 2.Allows for a very small stitch or a very large stitch 3.Needs to be in the highest positions whenever you end and begin a stitch. 4.Provides a way to raise and lower the needle manually. a.Thread taker up lever (sometimes called the eye) b.Bobbin case c.Hand wheel d.Stitch length control

The Sewing Machine If your fabric keeps snagging while you are sewing you should replace your needle. This happens when your needle becomes old and dull. If you are sewing and your thread keeps breaking or the needle continually comes unthreaded your needle is not in right.

Textiles Review

Textiles Natural Fibers- fibers produced by plants and animals Examples of natural fibers: 1.Cotton: Cotton Plant 2.Linen: Flax Plant 3.Wool: Sheep 4.Silk: Silk Worm

Textiles Synthetic Fibers- man-made textile fibers Examples of synthetic fibers: 1.Nylon 2.Polyester 3.Acrylic

Textiles How are fibers constructed into fabrics? (3 ways) 1.Weaving 2.Felting 3.Knitting How do you remove an oil based stain such as grease or greasy foods? **3 steps 1.Pre-treat with stain stick or concentrated detergent. 2.Then Wash using heavy duty detergent with hot water. 3.Rinse and inspect before drying.

Sewing/Construction Preparation Review

Information found on a pattern envelope 1.Amount of Fabric Needed for different sizes. 2.Type of Fabric Suggested 3.Notions Needed 4.Picture of finished product

Picking a Size For Pants, Skirts and Shorts, Choose the waist size first, yet if you have larger hips, then go with the hip size. Shirts: bust or chest around the fullest part. Compare to measurement of pattern size.

Pattern Guide Sheet (directions) Things you can find on your guide sheet 1.Line drawings of all the technical steps. 2.Pattern Pieces 3.General Directions 4.Cutting Layout 5.Sewing Directions, step by step

Pattern Symbols Grainline Notch Stitching line Place on fold

Pattern Marking Dots Button Holes Darts Notches Center Front/Back Pleats or Tucks

Sewing/Construction Techniques Review

Techniques Unless otherwise stated how big is a standard seam allowance? 5/8 inch To hold fabric into place temporarily without the use of pins a certain type of stitch is done. This stitch is called BASTING. This stitch is a very wide stitch that can be done by hand or machine using the stitch width.

Mistakes Ways you can remove stitched mistakes 1.Pulling and breaking thread on alternate sides of the seam 2.Clipping threads and pulling them from the fabric 3.Using a seam ripper to carefully break the threads.

Seam Finishes In this class we finished all of our seams using a serger. There are countless other ways to do this. Here are 4 examples

Seam Finishes Zig zag finish: do a zig zag stitch as close to the raw edges of each side of the seam. Serging: use a serger as close to the stitching line as possible Clean finish: fold/roll each side of the seam down and stich closely to edge to hold into place. Stitch and pink: stitch each side of the seam down and pink the edges with pinking shears

Techniques Grading- trimming each seam allowance to a different sizes so that the layers won’t create ridges and bulkiness on the outside of the garment. What is the purpose of finishing off seams? To prevent raveling

Different Weaves Plain weave Basket Weave Twill WeaveSatin Weave

Miscellaneous 1.Why do you pre-shrink your fabric before you start sewing? make sure it will not shrink after construction and you can work with the true size. 2. What is a selvage? The More thickly woven edge of the length of woven fabric.
