FIRST RESPONDERS NORMALLY WILL NOT BE ON THE SCENE IT WILL TAKE THEM TIME TO GET THERE SECURITY GUARDS WILL MOST LIKELY BE UNARMED WITH MINIMAL TRAINING

YOU will be responsible for your own safety during the initial phase of the incident. YOU must have a plan or face consequences; Even with a plan, you may not have time to implement it. YOU HAVE NOW BECOME THE FIRST RESPONDER

IF ACTIVE SHOOTER EVENT OCCURS QUICKLY ASSESS THE SITUATION HOW MANY SHOOTERS ARE THERE WHERE ARE THEY LOCATED WHAT IS THE BEST ACTION FOR YOU TO TAKE

RUN 1. ESCAPE IMMEDIATELY – DON’T DELAY 2. NEVER GO BACK FOR PERSONAL BELONGINGS 3. WHEN EXITING BUILDING – BE AWARE THERE MAY BE OTHER SHOOTERS OUTSIDE 4. LOOK QUICKLY BEFORE YOU GO OUTSIDE 5.WHEN ENCOUNTERING POLICE – HOLD HANDS ABOVE YOUR HEAD – POLICE WILL NOT KNOW IF YOU ARE GOOD OR BAD 6. PROVIDE INFO TO POLICE – HOW MANY SHOOTERS, WHERE ARE THEY – HOW MANY PEOPLE STILL INSIDE.

HIDE 1.TRY TO GET INTO A ROOM THAT CAN BE SECURED 2.LOCK DOORS – BLOCK WITH FURNITURE 3.SHUT OFF LIGHTS 4.SILENCE CELL PHONES 5.IF SAFE – CALL 911 – PROVIDE INFORMATION ON SHOOTERS’ LOCTION AND YOUR LOCATION. 6.LOOK FOR SOMETHING TO DEFEND YOURSELF WITH – FIRE EXTINGUISHER, PEN, ASHTRAY, GOLF CLUB, ANYTHING

FIGHT 1.ONLY AS A LAST RESORT AND THERE IS NO OTHER CHOICE 2.ATTEMPT TO DISABLE-INCAPACITATE-OVERPOWER THE SHOOTER(S) 3.BEST TIME TO ACT IS WHEN SHOOTER IS RELOADING 4.USE ANYTHING YOU CAN FIND TO ATTACK THEM 5.IF YOU DISABLE THEM – TAKE THEIR WEAPON 6.EITHER SHOOT THEM OR RUN – REMEMBER IF THE RESPONDING POLICE SEE YOU WITH A WEAPON, THEY MAY THINK YOU ARE THE BAD GUY.

ALWAYS REMEMBER YOU MAY ONLY BE SEEING PART OF THE PROBLEM THERE MAY BE MORE SHOOTERS INVOLVED THAN THE ONE YOU CAN SEE

Since each situation is different, there is no one defense in these situations. You must use your head – THINK. Every possible scenario cannot be prevented or planned for, but, you can be better able to survive the event, if you take the time to prepare. Always BE AWARE Always KNOW YOUR SURROUNDINGSrvive the event, if you take the time to prepare, train and drill. Be AWARE – always know your surroundings Always KNOW YOUR SURROUNDINGSrvive the event, if you take the time to prepare, train and drill. Be AWARE – always know your surroundings.

In these type of events, YOU become the first responder. Whether you survive the event is determined by you – your knowledge, your training, your preparedness will make a difference. In these times, everyone must make an effort to be more vigilant. In many areas/communities, Police Departments have limited manpower and resources and the response time to the scene could be significant. NEVER say that something like this cannot happen HERE. The reality is that it can.

KEEPING YOU SAFE If you are ever involved in a terrorist attack, the reality is that the only person that will keep you safe is YOU. What you know and how you’ve prepared can make the difference in whether or not you SURVIVE. Prepare Think Be aware of your surroundings Have a plan to SURVIVE Don’t be complacent – complacency can KILL you!
