Founded by UN Messenger of Peace, Dr. Jane Goodall The first group began in 1991, in Tanzania, Africa Focused on students identifying problems in their neighborhood and creating and carrying out solutions to those issues Aims to empower young people to make a positive difference in their world! Globally R&S is creating a new generation of engaged, active, conscientious leaders!

54 Years of Chimpanzee Research: In 1960, at the age of 26, Jane Goodall traveled from England to what is today Tanzania and bravely entered the little- known world of wild chimpanzees, armed only with a pair of binoculars and a notebook. 54 Years of Chimpanzee Research: In 1960, at the age of 26, Jane Goodall traveled from England to what is today Tanzania and bravely entered the little- known world of wild chimpanzees, armed only with a pair of binoculars and a notebook. There are Roots & Shoots groups all around the world! Check out Roots & Shoots groups carry out projects aimed at helping people, animals and the environment. The link below will show you just some of the amazing work R&S groups are doing the world over! Projects chosen by groups are based on local and/or global issues, and the interests and passions of the students involved! They are limited only by your imagination and energy!

Roots & Shoots in China A greener China requires having future leaders who have the know-how and the passion to come up with innovative solutions to fix our environmental problems! For over 20 years, Roots & Shoots has been present in China! There are Roots & Shoots groups active all over the country, with over 700+ schools across 29 provinces currently having a Roots & Shoots group!

Roots & Shoots in Beijing!

ISB litter pick up BCIS organic rooftop garden WAB wetlands information board Many international schools in Beijing, and beyond, have Roots & Shoots groups, including International School of Beijing ISB, Western Academy of Beijing WAB, British School of Beijing BSB, and Beijing City International School BCIS.

Many Roots & Shoots groups across Beijing are growing organic gardens as part of the Organic Grow Project, teaching students about where their food comes from, about healthy eating, healthy soils and clean water, as well as being fun and a great outdoor project!

100 million sharks are killed every year to feed growing demand in China for shark fin soup. The No Shark Fin Project has mobilized students from Beijing and all over China to reduce shark consumption by collecting individual pledges and stopping restaurants from serving Shark Fin Soup.

Wetlands are the highest in polluted waterways. Yet as the earth’s “kidneys”, humans need them in order to survive. The Clear Water Project trains students to find solutions to protect their local wetlands through mapping out ecological changes.

The ‘ Guardians of the Elephants’ project started in 2014, raising awareness about elephants, elephant conservation and the cruelty and damaging impact of the ivory trade.

Many schools also choose to look at their own local issues such as how to save resources and reduce consumption in the school, how to ensure a safe and healthy environment, etc Reduce – Reuse - Recycle

Roots & Shoots groups in Beijing have been working with migrant schools on educational, environmental, and community projects, as well as with animal shelters and stray animal programs. Plus so much more! It is up to you what you want to do!

Earth Day activities in Beijing Throughout the year, Roots & Shoots groups also participate in Beijing, China, and Global events, including Earth Day – A day of action and the International Schools Summit! There are also a number of Achievement Awards that Roots & Shoots groups can apply for as a result of their project work! To find out more, talk to your teacher, advisor, or contact the Roots & Shoots office!

International School Summits in Beijing! Objectives:  To create a Roots & Shoots international school community for both students and teachers  To give ideas, resources, support

Roots & Shoots Achievement Awards! Awarded annually for our most accomplished Roots & Shoots groups.

R&S group at WAB meeting Jane Goodall Dr. Jane Goodall comes to Beijing every two years! As part of a Roots & Shoots group, you will have the opportunity to meet with her and present your Roots & Shoots project work.

Issues related to the Environment, Animals and Community are endless. Some examples include: Air pollution and clean air solutions – e.g. electricity and car use, reducing meat consumption, tree planting! Water pollution and clean water solutions – waste, plastic, litter, etc. Animals and plants – welfare of pets and other animals, loss of habitat and biodiversity, consumption of endangered species like sharks, elephants (ivory), chimps, pangolins, turtles and TCM. Organic Gardens and organic food! Community health and welfare – education, health care, orphanages! And so much more!! What affects your local community?? Do a community survey and find out what’s important in your local area!

Your school’s Roots & Shoots group is the perfect opportunity for you to work on a project, or projects, that you care about! Here you can start to make a difference in your local community, and around the world! Share your ideas, interest and passions with each other and see who else wants to work on the same stuff as you! Then off you go! Stuck for ideas? Find out what other R&S groups are doing across China and around the world!

Did you know that you can use a Roots & Shoots project that you design and undertake during the year as CAS or C&S hours!! You can also design and undertake a Roots & Shoots project for your personal project! Talk to your teacher/supervisor to discuss these options more!

Who can help you once you get some ideas going?? Check out all the useful resources that are available in your Root & Shoots School Group Pack! Your Roots & Shoots support teachers, your CAS or Personal Project supervisor, your homeroom or advisory teacher, or any other teacher in your school can help steer you in the right direction for resources! Did you know Beijing has its own Roots & Shoots office, located in the BCIS elementary school campus in Shuangjing, Beijing? Go to to find out more!

Fantastic! Come and join thousands of others around the world who are making a positive difference to the world around them! Lets get started!!
