To obtain updates regarding an ongoing emergency, sign up for Purdue Alert text messages, view There are nearly 300 Emergency Telephones outdoors across campus and in parking garages that connect directly to the PUPD. If you feel threatened or need help, push the button and you will be connected immediately. If we hear a fire alarm during class we will immediately suspend class, evacuate the building, and proceed outdoors. Do not use the elevator. If we are notified during class of a Shelter in Place requirement for a tornado warning, we will suspend class and shelter in the basement or the lowest floor. If we are notified during class of a Shelter in Place requirement for a hazardous materials release, or a civil disturbance, including a shooting or other use of weapons, we will suspend class and shelter in the classroom, shutting the door and turning off the lights. Please review the Emergency Preparedness website for additional information. EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS – A MESSAGE FROM PURDUE

What is IMPACT?  A flipped classroom approach to learning calculus  Students watch lectures online (this is why you have an independent study)  This is important to succeed!  IMPACT Session Thursdays: Work in groups on IMPACT problems, do group presentations  Recitation WF: Go over questions from homework due the previous night, look at old exam problems (time permitting), and take a quiz  Same homework as regular MA 161 sections  Same exams as regular MA 161 sections

Exams  There will be three midterm exams:  Exam 1: Thursday, Sept 22, 8:00 pm.  Exam 2: Thursday, Oct 20, 8:00 pm.  Exam 3: Monday, Nov 14, 8:00 pm.  Locations of exams TBA  Date, time, location of final exam: TBD by the registrar  Make sure to check the course calendar regularly!

What do I use in this class?  We mainly use WebAssign: go to the course webpage, WebAssign login, and click LOG PURDUE UNIVERSITY, not the generic login button.  All homework is done through WebAssign  Video lectures can be found through WebAssign  Quiz scores, IMPACT scores found through WebAssign  A electronic copy of the textbook is available through WebAssign. You do not need a physical copy.  We only use Blackboard to communicate your group assignments (three times per semester) – please check Blackboard to find your group assignment before tomorrow  Calculators are not allowed in MA 161, 162, 261, 262, 265, 266, etc.

The Wonderful Course Webpage!  (OR go to math.purdue.edu > Courses > Course Pages > MA 16100I)  Contains all information you need for general IMPACT policies, WebAssign login, course calendar, and some other important things  Also, please visit my personal webpage weekly: (OR go to math.purdue.edu > People > Graduate Students > Search: Price > Webpage > (on the side) Calculus I IMPACT (Fall 2016))  IMPACT presentations will be posted by Friday every week  Quiz solutions will be posted after quizzes are graded

Course Ground Rules (Syllabus)  Please read the ground rules carefully.  You are responsible for knowing and adhering to the policies laid out in the ground rules.  In reference to the attendance policy:  If you need to miss, come late to, or leave early from a Thursday session, please Dr. Mummert and CC me explaining

SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION MA 161 5:30-6:20 UNIV 0017:30-8:20 PHYS 111 4:30-5:20 UNIV 0015:30-6:20 ME :30-8:20 PHYS 111 5:30-6:20 UNIV 001 Nicholas Angle Monday 3:00 – 4:00 PM KRCH 431 Brittany Hollowell Wednesday 11:30-12:30 KRCH 431

Course calendar  Check it regularly!  Gives information on lessons you should be watching, when homework is due, when the quizzes are and what lessons they cover, when exams are, etc.  Notice: You have homework for lessons 1 and 2 due Thursday evening  It is best to start your homework due Thursdays before the IMPACT session Thursday mornings  This Friday you have a quiz, but it is extra credit, so you don’t need to prepare for it

IMPACT Problem Set Grading  For every Thursday session, you will get an IMPACT problem set to work on in groups.  Every individual student will submit a write up of solutions for the IMPACT problems at the next IMPACT session  Each IMPACT problem set is worth 4 points (weighted the same as exam points)  Each problem set, one problem will be selected and graded for correctness (2 points)  The rest of the assignment will be graded for completion (2 points)  2 points if all problems are done, 1 point if all but a couple are done, 0 otherwise  This is course policy

Presentation Grading  Most IMPACT sessions, every group will present a problem from the previous week’s IMPACT problem set to the recitation instructor (not the whole class)  Your groups will receive their presentation assignment by Friday (posted on my personal webpage)  The problem will have several steps, and each student is expected to participate  Presentations are worth 3 IMPACT points (weighted the same as exam pts)  Students in the group must be prepared to present the problem from memory – no notes allowed  Students must be prepared to present the problem quickly and thoroughly (not every detail must be spelled out – if I want more details, I’ll ask for more)  If a student is not adequately prepared for the presentation (including taking too long to complete their part of the problem), the group will lose 1 point.  It is advised that groups communicate outside of class to agree upon a solution to their presentation problem.  All group members receive the same grade for the presentation, unless a group member is not there to present, in which case that group member receives a 0 (unless they are excused).

Showing Work and Explaining  On all work done in Purdue math classes, you are expected to show work. The next slide gives an example of a problem with a bad solution (in terms of work) and a good solution (in terms of work)  This goes for quizzes and IMPACT problem sets  On IMPACT problems, you are often asked to explain something. The following slide gives an example of a bad explanation and a good explanation.  Please be clear and explain thoroughly.  If you are having trouble with an “Explain” problem during an IMPACT session, please ask! These problems are some of the most important for mastery of the course content.

Example of Work 1 for IMPACT Problems

Example of Work 2 for IMPACT Problems

Attendance and groups  I will now take attendance and tell you your groups.  If I mispronounce your name, please let me know!  If you have a nickname that you prefer to be called, please let me know (and write it on your quizzes and IMPACT problem sets)  If we have time, please meet with your group members after I take attendance and get to know each other.  Tomorrow, please find your group (I will have signs for the groups) in HIKS B848 when you arrive  If you ever forget your group number, check Blackboard. It will be in your “grades” for the course.  Groups may change at first while people add/drop the course. Groups will be finalized this Saturday.
