Basic Rules for Design

Bull’s Eye: Order in which you place your elements First/center element on a page should be photos, then move out to text, then move out to white space. Start with photos and work your way out like a bull’s eye. Don’t jam (trap) text between photos!

Step 1: Columns (will probably be set up for you) Columns of equal size, use the same number throughout book 1 pica between each column Set external margins and don’t pass unintentionally; intentionally passing margins off page is called a “bleed.” Only bleed in one place per spread *Gutters are 2 picas

Step 2: Eyeline Everything sits on or hangs off from eyeline, it’s 2/3 from top or bottom Don’t put it in the center!

Step 3: Dominant Element Biggest photo: 2-3 times bigger than anything else on the page

Step 4: Story Package Headline Subheading Story

Step 5: Place Other Photos Sitting on or hanging from eyeline.

Step 6: Captions Width has to stay consistent with other captions in that package No more than two captions on top of one another Captions should be next to the photos; captions for dominant photo will be on the photo

Page Composition Don’t have photos that are the same size/shape in the same spread unless they’re related to one another (like in a mod). Each page should have a photo with 1 person 2 people Small group Large group

Also… Images should face toward the gutter (no one looking off the page unless it’s intentional).
