Access point for students with significant cognitive disabilities Indicate the relative position, before or after, of whole numbers on a 0 to 100 number line (independent MA.5.G.5.In.a). Instructional Strategies Set: The teacher will begin the lesson by having the students get in their groups (groups of 4) and work together on the focus activity. The students will work on the focusing activity for 5 to 10 minutes. Each group will be given a worksheet (worksheet A) with the picture of a map and will be asked to use the map to answer the four questions written below the map. The focus activity will introduce the students to the practical applications of the coordinate plane. The teacher will go over the answers and explain to the students that they will be learning to graph ordered pairs of numbers on the first coordinate plane. The teacher will explain that on a map, towns, streets, and points of interest are often located on a grid. In mathematics, we use a grid called a coordinate system, or coordinate plane, to locate points.

Body (Procedure): – The teacher will ask the students to take out their notebooks and write down the lesson key concepts that will be presented. – The teacher will then show a figure of the coordinate plane and explain its various components. – The teacher will explain to the students that you can use an ordered pair to locate any point on the coordinate system. The first number is the x-coordinate. The second number is the y-coordinate. – The teacher will demonstrate the step process that needs to be followed in order to identify the ordered pair that names a point. And how to identify its quadrant (the lesson will focus on the first quadrant of the coordinate plane). – The teacher will demonstrate how to connect the ordered pairs. – The students will take out their small whiteboards, dry-erase marker, and dry-erase eraser from under their chairs. – The teacher will show various groups of coordinate planes and will ask the students to identify the point for each and connect the dots. – The students will all show their answers to the teacher by placing their respective whiteboards up on the air and towards the front of the class. – The teacher will check for accuracy by looking at the figure the students come up with; and will also show the answer on the PowerPoint presentation. – The students will be advised to get into their groups (groups of 4). – The teacher will explain to the students that each will be receiving a different worksheet to complete. – The worksheets will be assigned by drawing small piece of paper out of a can. Each paper will have a letter which corresponds to a specific worksheet written on it. – The students will be asked to complete the worksheets. – The teacher will ask the students to put together the four worksheets according to number and tape them together with transparent tape.

Assessment: The students will demonstrate their knowledge of the lesson by completing a short test (worksheet J) containing 10 questions. The students will be expected to complete the quiz with 90% accuracy. Home Learning: The students will be given a worksheet (Worksheet Q) in which they will be asked to identify the point for each ordered pair and connect the ordered pairs to form a figure.
