OPENING STATEMENT I really enjoyed my first semester at URI and I owe a big thank you to the leadership program here. I have to say deciding to do this program when I came on Welcome Days was the best decision I could of made. I have learned so much about myself and how I am a unique leader. I have learned my strengths and have come to realize how to use them in any given situation. Before the leadership program I have never thought about my strengths but now I realized how they fit in with me. I’ve come to understand so much about others and how everyone’s leadership style is different. This course was an incredible experience.

SECTION 1 SELF LEADERSHIP (Student will express a personal values statement) A personal value that I always say and go by is “Honesty is Key”. When I took my VIA survey my top strength was Honesty and I definitely think that couldn’t have been any more accurate. All my friends that really know me and that I been around for while understand that if they lie to me or can’t be honest to me then that my respect for them goes down. I don’t see them as I used to and it is very hard for me to every trust them again. This was a value that I always had with me and always followed by for a long time ever since I was little. I believe that honesty is something that you can use in scene you are in and something a lot of people should do more. I feel if you can’t be truthful while speaking to me either if you are my friend, girlfriend or anyone at all then I can’t trust you. Even if it’s something small, I don’t respect it at all because it’s the small things that turn out to be huge later on if they get comfortable being dishonest to you. The way I see is that I believe that your being dishonest says a lot about your character who you are as a person.

SECTION 2 Leadership Theory and Models (Student will show knowledge of the “Servant Leadership” by Greenleaf) During HDF190 we all had to give a 2.5-minute speech on the theory of Servant Leadership, which was written by Robert K. Greenleaf. There are ten main characteristics of this theory, which are Listening, Empathy, Healing, Awareness, Persuasion, Conceptualization, Foresight, Stewardship, and Commitment to the Growth of People. Throughout the whole class I noticed that everyone’s servant leadership was different because everyone is not the same but one thing stayed the same. Those leaders understood and would always put others before them. The main purpose is that a servant-leader is servant first and it begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve.

SECTION 3 Inclusive Leadership / Diversity and its application to leadership (Student will create a personal code of inclusive leadership) After going to the NGLA Conference this year with IFC, I have met a lot of different Greek leaders from a lot of different schools and learning so much about everyone’s organizations. I took so much from that weekend that I can apply to not only my fraternity but learned so much about myself and how I can be a great leader in the future. I learned a lot about each chapter’s strengths and weaknesses and that just gave me insight on how they operated or how they structured their chapters. Throughout the weekend we had different workshops and we would brake up into small groups. As always we had to do icebreakers and of course there are always some leaders who are timid and shy to start off with. When I noticed this I started to talk to some of them and tried to make connections so they can feel more comfortable. This actually worked and I started to actually see how their own leadership style came out and seen what made them a leader. I noticed how everyone at my small groups had a different way of showing how they were a leader and how different their leadership style was. Everyone comes out of his or her shell different times and you just need to be patient for most but it will come out. That’s when I learned a little bit about myself also, I made the decision to go talk to the other shy leaders so they could participate in the activity that we were doing. I didn’t want them to be left and out and to feel down about themselves, so therefore I made an effort to include them into the group. Even though I was nervous to even make that first move but I didn’t let that stop me from demonstrating my own leadership style.

SECTION 4 Critical Thinking (Student will demonstrate proficiency of critical thinking) I believe that critical thinking is major component of this minor because with all the scenarios that we get put into, we have to make sure were always prepared for anything. This semester I was on the Risk Management committee in my fraternity and I was in charge of making sure that at every social or any event that we had everything was running smoothly. At times I had to use critical thinking skills to determine what is appropriate and what is not. During a lot of these events a lot can happen at any given time, therefore by using my critical thinking skills to think about what could happen, we avoid a lot of bad situations.

SECTION 5 (Interpersonal and Organizational Concepts and Skills ) (Student will describe examples of using active listening skills) My time being here at URI I think I really been an active listener and just using the opportunity with my involvement around campus I got to be a great active listener and learn how to be a better one over time. University of Rhode Island host welcome days and accepted days for kids currently in high school to come take tours, visit campus, and learn about organizations and opportunities offered at URI. During my first semester on welcome days, I had the opportunity to talk with a lot of students and really tell them all about the Leadership Institute and what the minor has to offer. Even though I had to talk to a lot of the kids and informed on a lot going on but a main factor is actually listening to them about there background, goals, what they are looking for and actually hit on those facts so I can make them interested in URI. When these kids are coming to school there goals are all different from each other and they all have different backgrounds. Now it’s my job to actually listen to what they want and what they are looking for, so that’s where listening becomes key and showing them that I am interested in what they are saying. Some ways I do that is like I mentioned earlier, encouraging them, restating basic ideas, understand there feelings, ask lots of questions and make sure to summarize everything we talked about.
